HANCEVILLE, Ala.- It was Youth Night inside Lane Horton Gymnasium, as the Hanceville Bulldogs took on the Corner Yellow Jackets in Thursday night hoops action. Hanceville ended up splitting their games against Corner. In the varsity girls’ game, the Lady Bulldogs quickly got out to a double-digit lead and never relinquished it, as Kynzlee Farr and Alex Twitty combined for 37 points in their 49-18 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets. The varsity boys game was a tale of two halves. Hanceville stuck with Corner for the first half and trailed by only eight at the half. The second half, however, belonged to the Yellow Jackets, and they outscored Hanceville 48-32 en route to a 70-46 rout of the Bulldogs.
Hanceville 49 – Corner 18 (Varsity Girls)
Hanceville didn’t waste any time getting out to an early lead. Alex Twitty scored the first seven points of the game to give the Lady Bulldogs the early lead. A rebound and putback by Kerrigon Moore and a steal and a basket by Mattie Keith made it 11-0. Twitty added a rebound and putback of her own to put Hanceville ahead, 13-0. The Lady Bulldogs’ defense held Corner without a field goal for almost five minutes before a trey by the Lady Yellow Jackets put them on the scoreboard. Kynzlee Farr put the finishing touches on what ended up being a great opening period for Hanceville, as she hit a pair of late baskets to give them a 17-3 lead going into the second.
It was more of the same in the second quarter for the Lady Bulldogs. Keith collected a rebound and putback, and Farr’s steal and basket gave Hanceville a 21-5 lead early in the second period. The rest of the first half belonged to Twitty, Farr, and the Hanceville defense, as the duo combined to score the final nine points of the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs held Corner to just three made field goals in the first half, and they would take a 31-7 lead into the locker room.
Hanceville would continue to add onto their lead to start out the second half. Moore drove to the paint and hit a basket to make it 33-9. Twitty nailed a short jumper and added a pair of free throws to give the Lady Bulldogs a 37-9 lead. Farr added a pair of late baskets to put Hanceville up 41-13 going into the final period.
Twitty knocked down two more free throws to make it 43-13 early in the fourth, which was run under a hot clock. Twitty collected another rebound and putback, and Laila Lewis, who was moved up from the JV squad, banked in a trey from the top of the key to help seal Hanceville’s 49-18 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Twitty finished with a game-high 20 points for the Lady Bulldogs, and Farr added 17 points.
Corner 70 – Hanceville 46 (Varsity Boys)
Drake Bentley drained a three from the right wing to give Hanceville an early 3-2 lead. Bentley later knocked down a short jumper and added a free throw to put the Bulldogs ahead, 6-5. Corner, though, finished the opening period strong, scoring the final six points to take an 11-6 lead going into the second quarter.
Javus Leusby drove to the paint and scored to cut it to 11-8 early in the second, but a Yellow Jacket trey gave them a 14-8 lead. That would be their final basket for a while. Shawn Pilman collected a rebound and putback, and Nick Davis and Sam Abney each knocked down a pair of free throws to cut it to 15-14 late in the first half. For the second straight quarter, though, Corner finished out strong, scoring the final seven points to take a 22-14 lead at the break.
A quick 8-1 run by the Yellow Jackets stretched their lead to 30-15. Leusby collected the offensive rebound and banked in a short jumper, and A.J. Carnathan nailed a three after getting the offensive rebound to cut it to 30-20. Corner ended the third quarter on a 14-1 run to widen their lead to 44-21 going into the final period.
Five straight points, including a three-point play, by Abney, made it a 46-26 game. Later in the fourth quarter, Bentley drained a pair of free throws, and Davis got fouled after making the layup and ended up hitting the free throw to trim it to 18 at 49-31. Free throws by Davis and Abney made it a 56-35 game. Corner would be too much for Hanceville in the end, though, as they would go on to defeat the Bulldogs, 70-46.
Bentley led the way for Hanceville with 11 points. Abney wasn’t too far behind with 10 points. Davis ended up with seven points, while Pilman and Leusby each posted six points.
Hanceville will now start preparing for their area tournament games at Vinemont next Thursday night.
