HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Leaders from Wallace State Community College and Western Governors University recently gathered at the James C. Bailey Center on campus to sign a new transfer institution agreement between the two schools. The common goal of the agreement is to provide Wallace State graduates and employees with flexible, personalized learning pathways to higher education and professional development through WGU’s bachelor’s and master’s level degrees, post-graduate certificates and endorsements.
“One of our goals is to increase the transfer opportunities for our students. We are now much more focused on the success of students post-transfer: what are they earning, how long it takes them to graduate upon transfer and, ultimately, what kind of life they lead afterward,” said Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Karolewics. “So, with that, we are very grateful for the opportunity to partner with Western Governors University in a different model for our students and one that we think will lead to greater opportunities for them.”
“Both of our institutions share common characteristics such as strong commitments to innovation, workforce development and the military community,” said Kimberly K. Estep, Ph.D., Southeast regional vice president for WGU. “We look forward to a long partnership with Wallace State that will help transform lives and the local community for decades to come.”
WGU will waive the application fee for any Wallace State graduate or employee who enrolls at the accredited online university. Graduates and employees can also now apply for WGU’s Community College Partner Scholarships valued up to $3,500.
WGU offers more than 120 online programs spanning business, technology, health care and K-12 education. Its flexible, competency-based model allows students to work at their own pace with support from assigned program mentors, and tuition for bachelor’s degrees is priced at approximately $4,000 per six-month term. Students may complete as many courses as they choose within a term with the approval from their mentor.
WGU has nearly 2,500 students currently enrolled from Alabama and more than 3,200 alumni statewide. The university has more than 418,000 alumni nationwide.
