HANCEVILLE, Ala.- The second varsity girls matchup of the night saw the No. 4 seed Fairview Lady Aggies take on the no. 5 seed Cold Springs Lady Eagles. Cold Springs got out to a quick lead after one, but a big second quarter by Fairview cut it to two at the half. The Lady Eagles would outscore the Lady Aggies, 27-15, in the second half en route to a 50-36 win over Fairview, as they will move on to the semifinals.
Ella Dickerson knocked down a basket down low on Cold Springs’ opening possession of the game. On their next possession, Dickerson found Kaydance Williams down low for a basket to give the Lady Eagles an early 4-0 lead. Whitney Quick drained a three from the left wing to cut it to 4-3, but Cold Springs turned up the pressure after that. Macie Huffstutler gathered up the offensive rebound and put it in, then baskets in the paint by Williams and Hollyn Bruer gave the Lady Eagles a 10-3 lead. Dickerson’s rebound and putback made it 13-3 late in the first. Maci Gregory drilled a three from the left wing and Darby Nichols added a free throw to trim the Fairview deficit to five at 13-7. Bruer found a cutting Dickerson down low for a basket and a foul. Dickerson drilled the free throw to put Cold Springs ahead, 16-7, and later added two more from the charity stripe to give them an 18-9 lead going into the second.
The Lady Aggies cut into the Lady Eagles’ lead to start out the second quarter. Emma Bryan drove down the lane and dropped in a floater to cut it to 18-11 early in the second. Later in the quarter, Quick drained her second three of the game, and Kaitlyn Redding drove to the lane and laid it in to make it a 20-17 game. Paizley Whitlow banked in a three from the left wing to put Cold Springs ahead, 23-17, late in the second. Free throws by Quick and Bryan cut it to four, and a driving layup by Redding trimmed it to just two at 23-21 at the half.
Bruer muscled in a tough basket down low to give the Lady Eagles a 25-21 lead early in the third. Later in the quarter, Whitlow buried a three from the left corner to stretch Cold Springs’ lead to 28-21. Redding put in a pair of baskets down low, and Quick drained a three to cut it to 30-28. Five straight points by Aleah Addison put the Lady Eagles up, 35-29, late in the third. Addison later drained another three from the left corner to give Cold Springs a 39-29 lead going into the final period.
The Lady Eagles added to their lead in the fourth quarter. Dickerson knocked down a basket down low, then later in the quarter, a technical foul was called on Fairview head coach Chris Nichols, and Dickerson knocked down both free throws to make it a 44-30 game. Another basket by Dickerson made it 47-30. Four straight points by Bryan cut it to 47-34, but free throws by Dickerson and Bruer helped put the finishing touches on a 50-36 win for Cold Springs, as they will advance to the semifinals.
Dickerson finished with a game-high 20 points for the Lady Eagles, and Addison ended up with eight points. For Fairview, Redding and Quick each finished with 10 points on the night, and Bryan put in nine points.
Cold Springs will take on top-seeded West Point in the semi-final round on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
