HANCEVILLE, Ala.- The second game in the JV Boys division featured the no. 3 seed Good Hope and the no. 6 seed Holly Pond. The Raiders took the early lead and widened their lead out to double digits at the half. Good Hope kept the lead in double digits for the rest of the contest, as they would go on to defeat Holly Pond, 50-31, to move on to the semifinals.
Caleb Boles drained a three from the left corner to give Good Hope the early lead, but baskets on the other end by Johnathan Hamby and Walker Marks gave Holly Pond a 4-3 lead. Eli Drake knocked down a pair of free throws, and Web Buchanan added a basket in the paint to put the Raiders ahead, 7-4, with four minutes remaining in the opening period. Good Hope increased their lead even more after that. Jaxson Richter, Mason Wright, and Buchanan all hit a basket in the paint, and Wright added a free throw to give the Raiders a 14-6 lead late in the first. The Broncos cut it to 14-8 on a pair of free throws by Sam Hunt. A free throw on the other end by Bentlee Marlow made it a 15-8 game going into the second.
Holly Pond started to cut into the deficit to start out the second period. Beau Huddleston hit a basket down low, Hunter Tolbert knocked down a short jumper, and a rebound and putback by Huddleston trimmed it to 15-14 with 4:45 remaining in the first half. The Raiders responded with a run of their own, as Buchanan and Drake scored all eight of Good Hope’s points to put them up, 23-14. Hunt banked in a floater to cut it to 25-17 late in the first half, but a layup by Chase Boles and a floater by Buchanan gave the Raiders a 29-17 lead at the half.
Chase Boles collected a steal and a layup to stretch the Raider lead to 31-17 early in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Caleb Boles and Christian Elliot each drilled a three to put Good Hope ahead, 37-20, late in the third. Hamby collected a steal and a layup, then later in the quarter, Jackson Sims scored four straight points to make it a 37-26 contest. Sean Jones hit a driving layup before the buzzer to give the Raiders a 39-26 lead going into the final period.
Richter knocked down a pair of shots down low, and Marlow added a floater to widen Good Hope’s lead to 45-26. A rebound and putback by Huddleston, plus free throws by Marks and Sims, cut it to 49-31, but Sean Jones knocked down a pair of free throws to put the finishing touches on a 50-31 win for the Raiders.
Buchanan and Drake each finished with nine points for Good Hope. Richter added eight, and Caleb Boles put in six points. For Holly Pond, Sims ended up with seven points. Huddleston and Jonah Shockley each posted six points, while Marks and Hunt each ended up with four points.
Good Hope will take on the Fairview/Hanceville winner on Monday at 3:45 p.m.
