CULLMAN, Ala. – Local nonprofit Hope Horses, Inc. is in the midst of a capital campaign intended to raise funds for a multiphase expansion that will include the purchase of property, as well as program and facility growth.

Hope Horses has operated for the past 11 years, providing adaptive horseback riding lessons for children and adults with physical, cognitive, social and emotional needs across the region.

Executive Director Kelsey Scott said the organization is the only Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.)–accredited therapeutic riding center in north Alabama. As a result, Hope Horses serves families from outside of Cullman and consistently maintains a waiting list.

The first phase of the expansion focuses on purchasing the property Hope Horses currently leases from the Benedictine Sisters, securing the land and facilities for future operations. Scott said ownership will provide stability for families, donors and the organization’s long-term mission.

Phase two includes program and facility growth, allowing Hope Horses to serve more participants. Plans include expanding adaptive riding lessons, adding field trips and camps, partnering with schools for equine-assisted learning opportunities and offering on-site physical therapy through a certified hippotherapist. In addition, more barns, training and evaluation spaces, expanded pastureland and hay storage are planned, along with the addition of more horses and staff.

Hope Horses currently serves about 30 riders weekly with five horses and maintains a waiting list of more than 10 participants. The expansion is projected to shorten wait times and increase overall capacity, though Scott said demand will remain high.

Those interested in supporting the project are encouraged to schedule a facility tour to learn more about the program and its impact. Scott emphasized that Hope Horses is community-driven, relying on staff, volunteers, donors and local advocates to sustain and grow its services.
