MOULTON, Ala.- The Holly Pond Lady Broncos traveled to Moulton to take on the Lawrence County Lady Red Devils in Thursday night basketball action. It was a defensive affair for the entire contest, and a big third quarter by Lawrence County helped them get past Holly Pond, 39-31.

Both teams came out of the gates strong on defense. Sadie Nail knocked down a pair of free throws to put Holly Pond on the scoreboard first, and Milly Huddleston split from the charity stripe to give them an early 3-2 lead. Sadie Nail put in a shot down low to make it 5-2, but Lawrence County went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead late in the first quarter. Maggie Nail buried a trey from the top of the key to tie the game up at eight going into the second period.

Maggie Nail’s second three from the top of the key gave Holly Pond an 11-8 lead, and with 2:46 remaining in the first half, Sadie Nail put in two more free throws to put the Lady Broncos on top, 13-10. The Lady Red Devils scored the final five points of the first half to take a 15-13 lead at the break.

Ava Thomas knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to keep it at a two-point game at 17-15. Lawrence County, though, went on a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 27-15. Huddleston stopped the bleeding with a short jumper to cut it to 27-17 with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter, but a late basket by the Lady Red Devils gave them a 29-17 lead going into the final quarter.

Maggie Nail banked in a long jumper to cut it to 31-20 with 4:47 remaining in the contest. Later in the fourth, baskets by Thomas and Sadie Nail made it a 33-24 game, but Lawrence County kept them at arm’s length the rest of the way, as they would go on to defeat Holly Pond, 39-31.

Sadie Nail and Thomas led the way for Holly Pond with nine points each. Maggie Nail added eight, and Huddleston posted five points.
