CULLMAN, Ala. — Darrell Johns, a longtime City of Cullman employee who spent more than two decades caring for the city’s public trees, died Dec. 24, 2025, at the age of 81.

Johns was born June 19, 1944, in Alabama. Over more than two decades with the City of Cullman, he became a familiar presence in the care and maintenance of the city’s public trees.

He retired in 2021 after 23 years in the arborist role, during which he played a key part in the ongoing management of Cullman’s tree canopy and supported the City’s long-running urban forestry initiatives.

In his role as city arborist, Johns was responsible for overseeing the planting, maintenance and removal of trees on City property, including along streets, in parks and in other public spaces.

The position also involved monitoring tree health and safety, advising City officials and the Tree Commission on urban forestry practices and supporting long-term planning efforts aimed at preserving the city’s natural landscape.

Following news of his passing, the City of Cullman released a statement recognizing Johns’ years of service and the impact of his work.

“Darrell dedicated many years to caring for Cullman’s trees, leaving a lasting mark on the beauty of our city,” the statement read. “His knowledge, commitment and love for the outdoors were evident in his work and appreciated by colleagues and community members alike.”

Johns was survived by his daughters, DeAnne Johns and Leanne Sterling (Anthony); granddaughters Ashley, Bethony and Callie; grandsons Josh and Hunter; and great-grandchildren Ember, Alaya, Carson, Blakely and Jaylen. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Johns; his mother, Icee Mae Speegle Johns; and his wife, Joyce Wilson Johns.
