Prep Basketball: Lady Raiders, Raiders collect wins over Hanceville

GOOD HOPE, Ala.- The Good Hope Raiders hosted the Hanceville Bulldogs in a pair of county games on Friday afternoon, and Good Hope ended up sweeping Hanceville. In the varsity girls’ game, the Lady Raiders quickly broke a close game in the second quarter, and they ended up rolling past the Lady Bulldogs, 76-31. In the varsity boys’ game, four quarters wasn’t enough to decide the outcome of this contest, so it went into overtime. A late run by Good Hope helped them get past Hanceville, 61-52.

Good Hope 76 – Hanceville 31 (Varsity Girls)

To open the game, Lexi Marshall drained a three and Ella Davis added a basket down low to give Good Hope an early 5-0 lead. Kynzlee Farr scored in the paint to put Hanceville on the scoreboard, then later in the quarter, Mattie Keith buried a three to cut it to 7-5. Four straight points by Sophie Konrad gave the Lady Raiders an 11-5 lead. Baskets by Alex Twitty and Kerrigon Moore made it a 12-9 game. A late free throw by Konrad put Good Hope ahead, 13-9, going into the second quarter.

Marshall knocked down a long-range shot from the right wing, and Davis put in a basket down low to stretch the Lady Raider lead to 18-9. Lucie Adams and Konrad each added a trey of their own to widen their lead to 24-9. Marshall scored off of a Hanceville turnover to make it a 26-10 game. Adams and Keith each traded floaters to keep it at a 16-point game at 29-13. A rebound and putback by Gabriel Richter and a trey by Molly Johnson gave Good Hope a 34-13 lead. Kaelyn Lamer and Keith each knocked down a deep ball, and Madeline Watwood added a basket down low to cut it to 36-21. A pair of free throws by Davis made it a 38-21 contest going into the half.

Twitty knocked down a basket down low, and Keith split her free throws to make it a 40-24 game early in the third quarter. Davis and Konrad scored the next seven points for the Lady Raiders, as the lead quickly swelled to 47-24. Later in the quarter, Adams scored five straight points for Good Hope, and increased their lead to 55-29. Davis collected a pair of baskets down low, and Konrad added a trey to give the Lady Raiders a commanding 62-31 lead going into the final period. The fourth quarter was run under a hot clock, and Good Hope would go on to rout Hanceville, 76-31.

Davis finished with 23 points for the Lady Raiders. Konrad wasn’t too far behind with 21 points. Marshall ended up with 15 points, and Adams collected 10 points in the win. For Hanceville, Keith finished with 12 points, and Twitty added six points.

Good Hope 61 – Hanceville 52 (OT) (Varsity Boys)

A.J. Carnathan scored the first five points of the game for Hanceville as they jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Owen Armstrong and Tyler Byrd each knocked down shots from beyond the arc on the other end for Good Hope, cutting it to 8-7 late in the first period. Sam Abney put in a basket down low to make it a 11-7 game, but a trey by Kye McSwain made it a one-point game going into the second period.

Abney knocked down a pair of free throws, and Kingsley Brown knocked down a shot in the paint to give the Bulldogs a 15-10 lead early in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Nick Davis scored through a foul and ended up hitting the free throw to put Hanceville ahead, 18-12. Davis collected a steal and a layup, then Shawn Pilman added a basket down low to make it a 22-12 game. Ayden Young and Abney each traded threes to keep it at a 10-point game at 25-15 late in the first half. McSwain hit a pair of late baskets just before the first half ended, including a floater just before the buzzer, to cut it to 26-19 going into the half.

A rebound and putback by Pilman and a trey by Hunter Black stretched the Bulldog lead to 31-21. Five straight points by McSwain, including a three-point play, made it a 31-26 game with a little over two minutes to go in the third quarter. Cayden Adamson collected a steal and a basket on the other end, then later that quarter, Memphis Johnson banked in a floater and got fouled in the process. He ended up hitting the free throw, and that tied the game up at 31. A technical foul called on Good Hope allowed Hanceville to break the tie, as a pair of Abney free throws, followed by a trey by Carnathan, gave the Bulldogs a 36-31 game. Johnson hit a free throw cut it to 36-32 going into the fourth quarter.

Tucker Screws banked in a hook shot, and McSwain added a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 36. Armstrong broke the tie with a trey from the left corner to give the Raiders a 39-36 lead with 4:40 left to go in the contest. A pair of baskets by Carnathan and Sims kept it at a three-point game at 41-38. Carnathan’s trey from the left wing tied the game up once again, this time, at 41. McSwain answered with a three from the left wing on the other end to give Good Hope a 44-41 lead. Abney put in a driving layup, and Pilman spilt from the free throw line to tie the game up at 44. Neither team would break the tie after that, and the game would be decided in overtime.

Davis scored in the paint to give the Bulldogs a 46-44 lead, but McSwain hit a basket down low, Ayden Young buried a deep trey from the right wing, and McSwain added a pair of baskets in the paint to give the Raiders a 53-46 lead. A late rebound and putback by Pilman cut it to 55-50. A pair of free throws by McSwain and one by Young made it a 58-50 game. Abney cut it to 58-52 on a pair from the charity stripe, but McSwain added another free throw, and Screws added a basket to put the finishing touches on a 61-52 win for Good Hope.

McSwain led the way for the Raiders with 28 points, and Young added nine points. For Hanceville, Abney finished with 15 points. Carnathan ended up with 13 points, and Davis added 11 points.

Good Hope will host West Point next Monday night. Hanceville’s varsity boys will go to Athens on December 29th and 30th to take on Westminster Christian and Tanner, respectively, and both teams will not play again until the new year, when they will go to Cold Springs on January 5th.
