CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Regional recently announced the delivery of its first set of triplets since opening a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in June 2024.

The triplets, one boy and two girls, were delivered by Dr. John Wideman with assistance from Dr. Taylor Massengill on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:33 a.m., 7:34 a.m. and 7:35 a.m. The proud parents are Dalton and Jessica Shoemake from Cullman.

“This marks an important milestone at a time when maternity services are becoming less accessible across many parts of Alabama,” the hospital said in a statement. “As one of the only community hospitals between Birmingham and Huntsville with a NICU, Cullman Regional is filling a gap in maternal healthcare by providing this level of specialty care.”

Cullman Regional’s NICU and maternity teams, including OB-GYN physicians, neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners, prepared in advance for the triplet delivery by running drills and setting up a dedicated room near the OR for immediate newborn care. Special A-B-C caps were used to identify the babies until their patient armbands were in place.

While the babies are all doing well, they will stay in the NICU for a while to grow and get stronger.
