FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Fairview Elementary students recently hosted a canned food drive, collecting more than 500 pounds of food for Cullman Caring for Kids.

Cullman Caring for Kids Executive Director Steven Sutter said recently the community has really stepped in to help meet the need and donations have been excellent.

“We have people from all walks of life pouring out their love through giving to the food banks,” Sutter said. “There are still multiple schools, businesses, organizations and churches, as well as individuals, doing food drives and asking what we need.”

Fairview Elementary Fifth-Grade Teacher and Aggie Ambassador Angela Kee said the year before she took over as sponsor, the Aggie Ambassadors had a canned food drive and it was a successful event, so they were excited to do it again with Cullman Caring for Kids.

“During college, I volunteered at Cullman Caring for Kids a few times and saw the need in our area,” Kee said. “So I merged the two ideas when I became sponsor. I planned the food drive so the donations would be available to families during the Thanksgiving season. This year it happened to correspond with families struggling due to SNAP benefits being placed on hold.”

The fourth- and fifth-grade Aggie Ambassadors were all involved with the canned food drive, Kee said.

“I’m so proud of the Aggie Ambassadors for being willing to lead this project,” Kee said. “I  am also so very thankful to each student and their families who donated items to this project and helped it be such a success. They made posters to hang in the hall, gathered food from each teacher at the end of the week and helped load it in my car.”

Fourth-grade Aggie Ambassadors include Naomi Avila, Sawyer Beck, Ella Bryan, Tate Dutton, Evie Fales, Ava Henderson, Amelia Hopkins and Lucas Lancaster.

Fifth-grade Aggie Ambassadors include Kayson Britton, Emily Calloway, Adeline Fales, Lia-Kate Gibbs, Savannah Harbison, Laken Jetton, Kaci Kugler and Maddie Plunkett.

“I know this has been a very stressful time for some, but I think it has opened a lot of eyes to an ongoing need in our community for help,” Sutter shared.
