CULLMAN, Ala. – The Link of Cullman County hosted its annual fundraising gala Thursday, Nov. 6. The “In His Image” Gala drew around 450 guests for an evening centered on compassion, service and faith.
The annual gala typically serves as the kickoff to The Link’s end-of-year giving campaign, but this year’s event placed special focus on addressing the growing hunger crisis brought on by the disruption of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
“We wanted to emphasize the importance of our community coming together to help neighbors in need. The Pantry at The Link is 100% community funded and volunteer run, and we’ve seen a tremendous increase in families seeking help,” said Melissa Betts, executive director of The Link.
The event’s theme, “In His Image,” was inspired by Genesis 1:27. It was meant to encourage attendees to see both themselves and others as reflections of God’s image. The gala’s visual motif, referencing Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam,” served as a reminder that serving others is an act of faith.
During the evening, several community members and organizations were honored for their dedication. Tonya Stephens received Volunteer of the Year, Dawson Foust was named Young Professional of the Year, Desperation Church received the Mission Partner of the Year award, Home Street Home Cullman Chapter was named Community Partner of the Year and Sara Manney received the Legacy Award.
Betts said the night’s success went beyond attendance and fundraising totals. “We made new friends and partners. That’s what community is about, supporting one another and strengthening the place we all call home.”
Funds raised will support The Pantry at The Link directly. Betts encouraged residents to “Give, gather and serve by donating, collecting pantry staples or volunteering their time.
“Everyone has a gift,” she said. “Whatever it is, we invite you to share it with us to make Cullman stronger.”
