ADDISON, Ala. – Addison hosted the Ragland Purple Devils in a first-round playoff matchup, and the Bulldogs were not very good hosts as they won easily, 71-39. Don’t let the score fool you, this game was a mismatch from start to finish. The Purple Devils scored the final 20 points of the game against the young pups in the fourth quarter.

Addison received the opening kickoff, and it only took them four plays to go 47 yards for the touchdown. Bulldog RB Seth Hammack ran it in from four yards out for the touchdown. This would be a recurring theme throughout the first three quarters. Connor Lane kicked the extra point and Addison led 7-0 with 10:36 left in the first quarter.

Ragland answered the call and scored after a six-play drive that went 57 yards for the touchdown. Ragland scored on a seam pass down the middle that went for 37 yards.

Not to be outdone, Addison took possession of the ball at their own 39-yard line and after QB Elijah Roberts’ 21-yard run, Hammack scampered 66 yards for his second touchdown of the night. The Lane extra point made it 14-7 at the 7:17 mark of the first quarter.

Ragland had a self-inflicted wound on the second play of their second drive as the snap went flying over the quarterback’s head and rolled 26 yards into the endzone where Bulldog Michael Lee recovered it for a Dawg defensive touchdown. Lane kicked the extra point and with 6:16 to go in the first, Addison had a 21-7 lead.

The Dawg defense was just getting started as on the Devils next possession back-to-back quarterback sacks by Lee and Casen Hill forced a Devil punt.

Addison took over at the Devils’ 49-yard line and drove down to the Devils’ 6-yard line where the drive stalled. Lane then kicked a 23-yard field goal which put Addison up 24-7 with a little over two minutes to go in the first quarter.

Then we saw something straight out of a Charlie Brown cartoon, as Addison’s kicker completely missed the ball on the kickoff and apparently the wind from the kickers foot moved the ball from the tee and the ball traveled about six inches. I was looking for Lucy somewhere on the field as she always pulled the ball before Charlie Brown kicked it. Yes, I’m showing my age.

The Devils couldn’t take advantage of the great field position and Addison held them on downs as the Devils only gained six yards on four plays.

The Bulldogs then drove 65 yards for another touchdown. This time the drive was mainly through the air as Roberts hit passes of 18 yards to Judah Wilkins, 17 yards to Trennon Burns and 18 yards to Michael Lee. Hammack finished off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run for his third touchdown of the night. Lane kicked the extra point and Addison led 31-7 with 10:29 left in the half.

Addison’s Scout Flynn recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Devil ten-yard-line. Three plays later, Roberts found Flynn in the endzone for the 11-yard touchdown pass. Lane kicked the extra point and with 9:37 left in the half, Addison had a commanding 38-7 lead.

Addison forced a three and out and after a great punt return by Wilkins, Hammack ran it in from the 14-yard line for his fourth touchdown of the night.  The extra point was no good and Addison led 44-7 with 7:43 to go in the first half.

Ragland took advantage of Addison maybe letting their foot off the gas as the Devils drove seventy-five yards in seven plays for the touchdown. The Devils scored on a 37-yard touchdown pass on a third down and 13 play call. The Extra point was no good and Addison led 44-13.

The Bulldogs went right back to work as four plays and 68 yards later put the Bulldogs in the endzone. Roberts found Wilkins for the touchdown pass from 8 yards out. Lane hit Silas Frazier on an improvised two-point conversion pass and Addison led 52-13.

The Devils hit back getting the ball with only 3:37 to go in the half, they ran five plays for 55 yards and the touchdown. The Devils connected on a 23-yard pass for the touchdown. The two-point try was no good and Addison went into the half leading 52-19.

Ragland got the second half opening kickoff and was immediately punched in the mouth. After running two plays for no yards, Bulldog DB Roberts intercepted a Devil pass and returned it 42 yards for the pick six. The extra point was no good and early in the third quarter, Addison led 58-19.

After forcing a punt, Addison took five plays to go 30 yards for another Bulldog score.  Mr. Roberts ran it in from 14 yards out for the touchdown. The extra point was missed and Addison led 64-19 with 6:30 to go in the third quarter.

Addison’s special teams struck again as Big Robert Gilmore blocked the Devil punt, and the Bulldogs took over at the Devil three-yard line. Scout Flynn took it in from one yard out for the touchdown and Addison made it 71-19 with the Lane extra point.

This is where the pups were put in and the Devils took advantage. The Devils scored on a 46-yard run, a 56-yard run and a 17-yard pass all in the fourth quarter. The pups have played very well this year, but Ragland’s starters are a bit better than our pups, as well they should be.

The game ended with Addison on top 71-39 and moving on to the second round.
