CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Community Theatre is trading in musical numbers for high-stakes deliberation with its newest production, “12 Angry Jurors,” opening Thursday, Nov. 6, at The Byre at St. Bernard.
Directed by Co-Chairs Kristy Crickard and Rodney Basenberg, “12 Angry Jurors” is a modern adaptation of the 1957 film “12 Angry Men.”
“The jurors are sequestered in the jury room and must decide the fate of a 19-year-old man accused of murdering his father,” Crickard explained. “It’s a really important exploration of our justice system, its flaws, as well as its importance. It also examines biases and assumptions that we make, especially in a world where we’re bombarded with quick information and even quicker judgments.”
This production will be staged in the round, with the audience surrounding the actors to create an immersive atmosphere. Crickard described it as if the audience would be part of the jury room. The show is part of the group’s first full performance season, which features a mix of musicals, comedies and dramas. Crickard said this is a deliberate move to expand the group’s artistic range.
“In the spring, we’ll be doing ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ a romantic comedy. We want to offer a variety of productions for both our audiences and our performers to learn and grow from,” said Crickard.
To better prepare themselves for the roles they would take on, the cast visited the Cullman County Courthouse for an up-close look at the judicial process.
“Some of our actors had never even been in a courthouse. We got to sit in jury seats, visit the jury room and hear stories from a longtime bailiff. It made us realize how true to life this story really is,” Crickard said.
She said she hopes the theme of “12 Angry Jurors” will resonate deeply with local audiences. The production also includes an interactive twist where attendees will be given jury numbers upon arrival and can cast their own “verdicts” before leaving the theater.
In addition to the performance, Cullman Community Theatre will host a canned food drive during the show’s run to benefit Cullman Caring for Kids. Audience members are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to donate.
“If you love theater, you’re going to love this,” Crickard said. “Whether you’re a fan of courtroom drama or not, it’s just great theater.”
Showtimes are Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. All performances will take place at The Byre at St. Bernard. Seating is limited; it is recommended to arrive early.
