Obituary: Alton “Bo” Bland

A graveside service for Alton “Bo” Bland, 89, of Hanceville will be 11 a.m., Saturday October 25th at Hopewell Cemetery.  Dr. David McGowin will be officiating.

Mr. Bland was born October 12, 1936, in Hanceville, Alabama to the late Andrew & Emma Bland.  He passed away October 12, 2025, at Hanceville Nursing Home.

He worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator for a road construction company before spending 24 years with The Birmingham News, where he retired. Alton was a hardworking man who took pride in everything he did. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking, finding joy and peace in working with his hands.

He will be remembered for his dedication, kind spirit, and the care he showed to his family and friends.

Mr. Bland is survived by his children, James “Jimmy” Bland (Cindy), Kelly Taylor (Danny); grandchildren, Jessica Raper (Justin), Tyler Bland (Jennifer), Kasey Creel (Jake), Kristen Searls (Eric); great grandchildren, Dalyn Bland, Anastasia Bland, Caleb Raper, Olivia Raper, Jude Creel, Lucy Creel, Max Creel, Harrison Searls, and Henry Searls.

Mr. Bland was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Bland; his parents, Andrew & Emma Bland; his brother, Clyde Bland; and his sister, Ruth Mayfield.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tyler Bland, Justin Raper, Jake Creel, Eric Searls, Hayden Clements, and Steve Burgett.

The family would like to thank Hanceville Nursing Home, and Southern Care New Beacon Hospice for all of their care and support.
