RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. – West Point hit the road for a region matchup at Russellville Friday night, and the Warriors had their hands full with the Golden Tigers. Russellville went into the locker room leading 21-7 at halftime and tacked on three more touchdowns in the second half to pull away with a 42-14 win over West Point.

After both teams exchanged punts to start the game, Russellville found the end zone on a long touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead over the Warriors with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter. A big run by Ollie Howell moved West Point’s offense into Tigers territory later in the first quarter and the Warriors finished the drive in the end zone when quarterback Max Patterson hit Colton Thrower for a 13-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7 with 24 seconds left in the period.

The Golden Tigers didn’t take long to respond, scoring on a 7-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the second quarter to pull ahead 14-7. West Point punted the ball away on the ensuing possession, but it was muffed by the Tigers and recovered by the Warriors at Russellville’s 36-yard line. However, an interception cut the scoring opportunity short and gave the ball back to the Tigers. A 65-yard gain on a big pass got Russellville’s offense down to the 6-yard line and the Tigers scored a couple plays later to extend their lead to 21-7. Russellville missed a field goal in the final seconds of the first half and West Point went into the locker room trailing 21-7 at the break.

The Warriors came out strong to start the second half, scoring on a 61-yard touchdown run by Howell to make it a 21-14 game just one minute into the third quarter. However, Russellville responded with back to back scoring drives to stretch its lead to 35-14 midway through the third. The Tigers scored on a 55-yard pass late in the third to make it a 42-14 game and neither team found the end zone the rest of the way, leading to a 42-14 win for Russellville.

West Point (4-4) will be back home next week for a region game against Ardmore.
