CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman was back on the road for a non-region battle at Brewer Friday night and the Bearcats returned home with their first win of the season. Cullman led 14-3 at halftime and tacked on 10 more points in the second half to secure a 24-11 win.
Quarterback Colt Colvard hit Brooks Loftin down the Cullman sideline for a 45-yard gain on a third and long early in the first quarter. Two plays later, Kolby Holt took a quick pass on a jet sweep around the right edge for a 30-yard touchdown and a 6-0 lead for the Bearcats. Brewer was forced to punt later in the first, but it was muffed the Holt and recovered by the Patriots at the 6-yard line. However, Cullman’s defense held Brewer to just a field goal and the Bearcats maintained a 6-3 lead with a little over a minute remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Colvard tossed one to Morgan Holley just before he was about to be sacked and Holley weaved his way 40 yards through Patriot defenders all the way down to the 6-yard line. Two plays later, Chance Hausler took a handoff into the end zone for another Cullman touchdown. Colvard floated one to Holley on the following two-point conversion attempt and Holley brought it in with one hand to make it a 14-3 game early in the second quarter.
After mishandling a punt earlier in the game, Holt took the next punt he returned it all the way down to Brewer’s 2-yard line but a fumble two plays later cut the scoring opportunity short for the Bearcats. Brewer put together a long drive and a big run moved the Patriots inside Cullman’s own 10-yard line but the ‘Cats bowed up on defense once again, forcing Brewer to turn it over on downs and preserving the 14-3 lead going into halftime.
The Patriots got the ball to start the third quarter and went three and out, giving the ball back to the Bearcats around midfield. Cullman put together a long, methodical drive that chewed up time and yardage and they capped off the possession with a 27-yard field goal by JD Ellerbee, stretching the lead to 17-3 with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Colvard capped another scoring drive with a 6-yard touchdown run, putting the Bearcats in front 24-3 with 8:31 to play. Brewer was able to score on a long pass on the next possession to trim the lead to 24-11 but the Patriots couldn’t climb back any further than that as a Tyler Brock interception put the finishing touches on Cullman’s first win of the season.
Bearcats Head Coach Trent Walker was excited to pick up his first win of his tenure, but he was even more excited for his team. After a slow start to the season and some heartbreaking losses, the players continued to work hard for one another, and Walker is proud to see it pay off with a road win.
“I’m just so proud for our guys and for our program. You watch these young people continue to come to work each week despite having some results where we came up just short. They weren’t discouraged and they came to work and stayed together. The guys continue to trust the process, and they get to see the fruits of that tonight with a victory on the road,” Walker said. “It was really exciting spiritually as a head coach back at my alma mater to see all the smiles, laughs and dancing and seeing the seniors get that first win. In terms of the game, we want to learn how to win these games convincingly and as a coach you have to remind yourself how young you are. There were a lot of learning moments throughout this game. We would play well in spurts and then we just wouldn’t finish. Whether it was explosive plays given up on defense or penalties on offense or not getting third downs when we needed them. But anytime you can get a win they’re hard to come by so we’re going to celebrate this one and enjoy it. Then it’ll be time to focus on our next opponent which obviously is a good one but I’m proud of these young men and what they accomplished together.”
Cullman (1-5) will head to Hartselle next Thursday night for a big region battle with the Tigers.
