CULLMAN, Ala. – The Student Eagles of Cullman will host a 5K and Joggers Mile on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. at Randall Shedd Community Park in Fairview to raise money for two local organizations.

Rebekah Blocher and Allison Johnson are the adult sponsors of the group. The Student Eagles parent association is the Eagle Forum of Alabama.

“Last year we had 8-10 kids in our group, this year we have more than 30,”  Blocher said. “At our first meeting, we went around the circle and asked each student what issues were most important to them. The consensus was the pro-life cause. We talked about what we could do to support this cause and one of the students, Brady Johnson, suggested we host a 5K.”

Last year was the group’s first race and they were able to raise $7,000 for First Source for Women pregnancy center.

“This year the kids voted to support two causes: First Source for Women and The Cullman County Foster Parent Association,” Blocher said. “We will have a bouncy castle, face painting, food trucks, a student praise band and games. We’ll give out medals and we have some great prizes like gift cards to Half Shell Oyster House, Taco Marg, Main Nutrition, Karma’s Coffee House and many others.”

The course is an AHSAA-certified 5K. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the 5K starting at 10 a.m. and the Joggers Mile immediately following.

On their event T-shirts this year, they added the words “imago dei” which is Latin for “image of God.”

“One of the reasons that our group is so passionate about supporting this pro-life cause is that we believe all human beings are made in God’s image,” Blocher said. “Genesis 1:27 says that: God made us in His own image. This matters because it means that each and every human life, no matter how small, is infinitely valuable and worthy of protection. This is why we believe it is important to support these two pro-life ministries in Cullman.”

According to Blocher, “The Student Eagles exist to raise up leaders among the next generation and to give students opportunities to learn about and participate in government and civics to make a difference in the world. We visit the legislature, sit in on committee hearings, interview elected officials, participate in community service projects, debate top issues and work hard to educate peers through social media and newsletters. We are working on starting a podcast soon.”
