CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman was back home for a varsity match against Muscle Shoals Tuesday night, and these teams needed all five sets to decide a winner. The Bearcats took the first two sets to jump out to a 2-0 lead but the Trojans rallied to win the next three, coming from behind to win the match 3-2.
Cullman 2 – Muscle Shoals 3 (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 10-15)
The Trojans jumped out to a 4-2 lead early in the first set but the Bearcats put together a run to pull ahead 11-8. Muscle Shoals moved back in front 16-14 as the set went on and led 20-19 at one point but Cullman rallied to score six of the next seven points and win the opening set 25-21.
Cullman held a slim, 8-7 lead early in the second set and the Trojans were able to tie things up at 12 as the set continued. The Bearcats pulled ahead 16-12 and extended the lead to 21-15 at one point before closing things out and taking the second set 25-18.
Muscle Shoals bounced back in the third set, leading the way 6-3 early on and maintaining an 11-8 advantage as the set went on. The Bearcats were able to tie the score at 14 at one point but they couldn’t keep pace with the Trojans down the stretch and dropped the third set 25-18.
The fourth set was defined by big scoring runs from both teams. Cullman jumped out to an early, 4-1 lead but the Trojans rallied to tie things up at 9 apiece. The Bearcats pulled back ahead 15-11 at one point but a 9-1 run from Muscle Shoals gave the Trojans a 20-16 lead. Muscle Shoals held off a late push from Cullman to take the set 25-23 and force a tiebreaker.
The Bearcats got off to another fast start in the fifth and final set, leading 3-0 early on. However, a 7-1 run from the Trojans put Muscle Shoals in front 7-4 midway through the set. The Trojans stretched their lead to 10-5 at one point and finished strong, winning the tiebreaker set 15-10 and taking the match over Cullman 3-2.
The Bearcats will be back on the court this weekend at the Fort Payne Invitational.
