CULLMAN, Ala. – Around 30 people turned out for a sweet event at the North Alabama Agriplex recently – the Farm Kids Club Honey Harvest.
“Last year we hosted our first honey harvesting event and this year we’ve grown substantially,” Youth Programs Manager Samantha Catland said. “We were able to bring in hives, an electric knife and the spinner for our group and it’s been a great event.”
During the honey harvesting, 24 kids and multiple parents and caregivers were able to take part in the process.
“Last year was our first honey harvest and the staff handled the harvesting portion, so it was neat to experience it,” Catland said. “We host this event once a year with the Farm Kids Club.”
Master Beekeeper Bill Grimmett said he was very excited for the turnout for the harvesting class.
“I truly enjoy watching the kids react to the process and soak the information in,” Grimmett said. “This was such a nice way to experience harvesting and many may will take the knowledge and apply it much further. I love being able to work with these groups.”
The Agriplex will partner with the Cullman County Extension Office on Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. to offer a Beginner Beekeeping class as part of its Military Veterans and Beginning Farmer series. Sign up at www.aces.edu/event/beekeeping-for-beginners-workshop.
