HOLLY POND, Ala. – Holly Pond kicked off region play against Sylvania Friday night and it was a nailbiter between the Broncos and the Rams. Sylvania scored to take a 21-18 lead over Holly Pond with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but a big kick return set the Broncos up with a short field and Boston Gibbs found the end zone with just 24 seconds on the clock to give Holly Pond a dramatic, 24-21 win over the Rams.

Gibbs got the Broncos on the board first when he broke free for a 79-yard touchdown run to make it a 6-0 game midway through the first quarter. The Broncos maintained that lead throughout most of the first half, but Sylvania answered with a touchdown just before the end of the second quarter to take a 7-6 halftime lead.

Gibbs’ second touchdown run of the night put Holly Pond back in front 12-7 with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter and in the final seconds of the period, Gibbs got loose for a 55-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead to 18-7 at the start of the fourth. A Rams touchdown trimmed the lead to 18-13 with 7:23 remaining and Sylvania capped off another scoring drive with 1:49 on the clock to take a 21-18 lead.

However, the Broncos still had some big plays left in them and Miguel Garcia returned the ensuing kickoff back 75 yards to set up Holly Pond’s offense deep in Rams territory with 1:24 to play. A couple of plays later, Gibbs scored from 7 yards out with 25 seconds on the clock to secure a dramatic, 24-21 region win for the Broncos.

Holly Pond (2-1) will travel to Brindlee Mountain for another region game next week.
