Funeral Service for Sylva June Mathis McGukin, age 88 of Cullman, will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. David McGowan officiating; burial at Cullman City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. McGukin passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Woodland Village Health Care. She was born, July 18, 1937, to Coleman Bedwell Mathis and Mary Laurine Mathis.
Mrs. McGukin was a college instructor at Wallace State Community College, where she taught industrial sewing. She was the owner of Sylva’s Sewing Machine Center and was a founding member of New Freedom Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Winford Franklin McGukin; brothers, Coleman Mathis and Jimmy Mathis.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth (Patricia) Hutson; daughter, Kathy Chandler; grandchildren, Charles (Cristy) Chandler, Marcus (Courtney) Hutson, Derrick (Brooke) Hutson, and Mary Kathryn (Jeremy) Gilbert; great grandchildren, Karly, Claire, Mya, Cavan, Grant, Berkley, Ava, Jayce and Ryder; sister, Sherry Mathis Dyke; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, family and friends.
