CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism on Thursday hosted a special community forum at the OmniPlex to gather input on the future of East Side Park, which is located about half a mile from East Elementary School at 1315 Seventh St. SE.

Formerly known as Lions Club Park, the site is slated for renovation pending the outcome of a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant, according to CPRST Executive Director Nathan Anderson. He said the City of Cullman is ready to invest $500,000 into renovations, but if the grant is received, it would double the budget to $1 million.

The overall goal of the project is to enhance accessibility, safety and recreational opportunities that are exciting for community members in the surrounding areas.

Plans discussed include a fully inclusive playground for children of all ages and abilities, updated restrooms, improved basketball courts and new sports courts that may support activities such as pickleball or futsal. A dog park is also under consideration.

Community members at the forum voiced support for shaded areas, safer parking, better traffic control and family friendly restrooms, as well as upgraded lighting and drainage on the ballfields. Residents were also given the opportunity to cast their votes on the types of playground equipment they would like to see installed in the park.

Anderson said park designers will include public feedback into three possible layouts, which will be presented at a future meeting. In addition to all the renovations, the importance of preserving the park’s trees and maintaining its peaceful atmosphere was also discussed.

East Side Park is the last of Cullman’s neighborhood parks to undergo major renovations as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to improving local recreation. Construction is expected to begin once the grant process is finalized.
