CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Museum kicked off its annual April Walking Tours this morning. There will be tours every Saturday in April at 10 a.m.

Cullman County Museum Events Coordinator and Researcher Julie Burks said, “The April Walking Tours is a state-sponsored program that started in 2003. Our museum has hosted the Walking Tours since 2006. Once held in June, the program dates moved to the month of April due to the many requests regarding the hot temperatures in June.”

The tours are free and start from the front porch of the museum at 211 Second Ave. NE.

“The Walking Tours last about one hour and cover many sights in our downtown historic district,” Burks said. “Returning to the museum, participants will have an opportunity to tour the museum, free of charge. Participants will be informed about historical locations but also the history of many businesses that are in operation today.  This year each Saturday will have a different guide, who will bring unique insight and personal research to share on the tour.”

Special Guest Tour Guides this year are:

  • April 5: Robin Sterling
  • April 12: Roberta McClellan
  • April 19: Ben Harrison
  • April 26: Michael Sullins, accompanied by Dr. Bill Peinhardt

”This will be the first time for Robin, Roberta and Ben to be a Special Guest Tour Guide, and we are excited that they chose to be a part of this program this year,” Burks said. “Robin Sterling has authored several books on the history of Cullman, and is currently working on the school history book. Roberta, the education coordinator for Traditions Bank, is currently sharing her knowledge of our strawberry history by hosting presentations at our  local schools. Michael and Dr. Bill are well known as local historians; (sic) this program would not be the same if they were not involved. Michael Sullins has been a guide since the first tour he conducted in 2007 as the local historical society president. Last, Ben Harrison is the director of the Cullman Regional Airport, and like the others has historical family ties with Cullman.”
