Obituary: James D. “Smokey” Johnson

Funeral service for James D. “Smokey” Johnson is Monday, November 11, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Cullman Funeral Home Chapel, with Dustin Johnson officiating.  Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. prior to the service and interment will follow at Valley Springs Cemetery. 

Cullman Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.   

Smokey was born on May 6, 1948, to Alton and Mabel Johnson.  He passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Woodland Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Opal Johnson, Audrey McSwain, and Sheila Whatley; brother, Bodie Johnson. 

He is survived by his brothers, Tommy Johnson, Joe Johnson, and Danny Johnson; one sister, Hassie McCroy; nieces and nephews, Annette Graveman (Ricky), Dolly Johnson (Tracy), Phillip Johnson (Angie), Mossy Smith, Candy Smith (David Sizemore), Kathy Daniel (Richard), Larry McCroy (Dawn), Darrel McCroy, Tim McCroy, Rodney McCroy, Kenneth McSwain (Pat), Frances Tucker (John), Tammy Hesson, Rusty Whatley (Ashley), Brett Whatley (Holly), Tiffany Whatley Phillips (Tae); several great nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends. 

Serving as pallbearers are Kyle Smith, Nathan Johnson, Travis Brock, Wesley McSwain, Jeremy McSwain, and Brett Whatley. 

Family will always remember Smokey as a kind, giving, and loving person.  He was always doing for others and did his very best at whatever he wanted to accomplish.  He loved Corvettes and always wanted one.  He was a very sweet and pure soul who will be missed greatly by those who loved him.
