CULLMAN, Ala. – Authorities are investigating a shooting and carjacking incident that ended at the intersection of U.S. Highway 278 and U.S. Highway 31 Sunday, Sept. 1, leaving two hospitalized. The incident began on County Road 463.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and Cullman Police Department (CPD) were on on-site all afternoon and into the evening processing the scene.

CCSO Lt. Chad Whaley reported that two individuals were transported to area hospitals with gunshot wounds, including the victim and suspect.

A third suspect was being sought in connection with the incident. However, the third suspect in question, labeled by a local political blog as a Hispanic male with a backpack running from the scene, appears to not be involved. At this time, there appears to be nothing linking him to the crime.

The incident is believed to be isolated, and a substantial law enforcement presence continued in the area until the initial investigation was completed.

Mary Beth Sellers, public relations for the City of Cullman, stated the CPD believes all involved parties have been apprehended and reassured the public stating, “Last night’s event ended with two individuals in medical care – the victim and the suspect. This matter is still under investigation and CPD will do anything to assist CCSO in the matter. At this time, there is no threat to the community. We cannot comment further at this time. We do however ask you take a moment and pray for all involved.”

Both the CCSO and CPD stated they are committed to providing further updates as the situation develops.
