CCBOE recognizes student achievements

CULLMAN, Ala. – Prior to the Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) monthly meeting, Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette recognized multiple student-athletes and scholars for their recent achievements.

Allison Rice and Kallaway McKinnon from Cold Springs and Trey Thompson and Tyce Thompson from West Point were winners of the Elk’s Hoop Shoot competition, as well as participants in Southeast Regional competitions. Each finished in the top 12 of his or her age division.

Rice placed 12th in the nation in the 8-9 girls division. Trey Thompson placed fifth in the nation for the 10-11boys’ division. McKinnon placed third in the 12-13 girls’ division. Tyce Thompson placed second in the 12-13 boys’ division.

Good Hope High School athletes Mason McCurry and Ivey Maddox were called to the front of the meeting to share news of their accomplishments. Maddox was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Year for her outstanding performance with the Good Hope Lady Raiders basketball team; McCurry landed the title of State Archery Champion with a score of 296 to finish his season.

Cullman County Schools’ Fast Track program was recognized, with over 30 students completing a certification or an associate degree before graduating from high school; this program gives students a head start, leaving them two years ahead after their high school graduation.

The last two teams to be recognized by Barnette were West Point High School’s Scholars Bowl Team and Girls’ Golf Team. The Scholars Bowl students clinched the spots of the ASCA District Champions, Varsity State Champions and second-place winner in the nation.

The West Point High School’s Girls’ Golf Team claimed the title of state runner-up for their efforts and skills on the green.

The next CCBOE meeting will be held on Thursday, June 13, with the work session beginning at 3:30 p.m. and the meeting immediately following.
