BIRMINGHAM, AL (03/04/2024) Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) is delighted to announce significant leadership appointments within its academic administration. Dr. Laura Stultz, who has been serving as Interim Provost, has been officially named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the College. Additionally, Dr. Kent Andersen, previously the Interim Associate Provost, has been permanently appointed to the role.

Dr. Laura Stultz brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by post-doctoral work as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Indiana University. As a member of the BSC faculty since 1997, Dr. Stultz has taught courses in general and inorganic chemistry, where her students have described her as patient, caring, and willing to work with students outside of class. Her outstanding leadership as area chair and BSC’s Interim Associate Provost in 2022 and Interim Provost beginning 2023 underscores her dedication to student success, commitment to research, and passion for academic excellence. Her appointment will undoubtedly enhance BSC’s academic programs and support services.

Dr. Kent Andersen, who has served as Interim Associate Provost since June 2023, joined BSC in 1999. He holds a BA from Iowa State University, a Master of Literature from American University, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership and Policy from Vanderbilt University. At BSC, he has taught courses in introductory writing, science fiction, and leadership studies. For more than a decade, he led the College’s Krulak Institute, which houses programs focused on leadership, internships, mentoring partnerships, and community engagement. Along with his interim appointment as Associate Provost, he has served as Interim Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, which includes preparing BSC for its 10-year reaffirmation of accreditation renewal from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

“Dr. Stultz and Dr. Andersen have consistently demonstrated their dedication to our students, faculty, and staff,” said BSC President Daniel B. Coleman. “Their vision aligns perfectly with BSC’s commitment to providing a transformative educational experience.”
