HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Glencoe Yellow Jackets came swarming into Holly Pond to face the Broncos Friday night and after falling behind 6-0 early, the Yellow Jackets stormed back to score 20 unanswered points before halftime and continued pulling away in the second half to defeat the Broncos 49-18.

The Broncos received the opening kickoff and after starting at their own 41, they quickly marched down the field behind a strong running game. Sawyer Olinger recorded five carries for 43 yards on the opening drive to get the Broncos down to the Glencoe 13-yard line where Boston Gibbs took over and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown to put Holly Pond in front 6-0.

The Yellow Jackets took only a minute to respond. Starting on their own 39, Aaron Mann carried the ball twice and put Glencoe on the Broncos side of the 50. Bronner McMurrey then took a screen pass 47 yards for a Yellow Jackets touchdown and gave Glencoe a 7-6 lead.

Holly Pond was forced to punt later in the first quarter and Miquel Gracia pinned the Yellow Jackets back at their own 15-yard line. Following a Bronco sack, Brady Kitchens found Braylin Smith open for a 13-yard gain and Glencoe was able to move the ball up to the Broncos 42 behind the hard running of Mann. Kitchens later found McMurrey running down the sideline for a 42-yard touchdown and the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead 14-6.

The Broncos began putting together a great possession later in the second quarter, but the drive stalled at the Glencoe 39-yard line and the Yellow Jackets took over on downs. Two plays later, Kitchens found Jayden Patton down the right side and the Yellow Jackets moved down to the Broncos 26. Mann took over from there, carrying the ball into the end zone for another Glencoe touchdown and stretching the lead to 20-6 at halftime.

Holly Pond surprised the Yellow Jackets with an onside kick to start the third quarter and got the ball with good field position, but an interception led to a short field for Glencoe and two plays later, Wade Segrest scored for the Yellow Jackets to make it a 27-6 game.

Holly Pond put together a solid drive on the ensuing possession and after working down to the 6-yard line, Olinger called his own number and ran it into the end zone to cut the lead to 27-12.

However, the Glencoe offense scored three more times in the second half to put the game out of reach. Olinger got loose for a 66-yard touchdown run later in the fourth, but the Broncos couldn’t put any more points on the board and Holly Pond fell to the Yellow Jackets 49-18.

The Broncos will remain home next week to host a regional game against Gaston.
