PREP VOLLEYBALL: West Point splits tri-match with Cold Springs, Lawrence County

WEST POINT, Ala. — The West Point Lady Warriors hosted Lawrence County and Cold Springs in a tri-match on Tuesday afternoon. West Point lost 3-1 to Lawrence County and Cold Springs was swept by the Lady Red Devils. The Lady Warriors finished the night by sweeping the Lady Eagles.

Lawrence County 3 – West Point 1

Lawrence County jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first set, but West Point later cut it to 8-4. The Lady Red Devils pushed their lead to 12-4, but behind a point by Patton Fell, an ace from Laklin Shadix, and a kill by Fell, the Lady Warriors trimmed the deficit to just four at 12-8. Lawrence County increased their lead to 16-10, but a kill by Liberty Shadix made it a 16-12 game. West Point later made it a 20-14 game on a point by Hallie Wheeler, but they wouldn’t get any closer after that as Lawrence County ended up taking the first set, 25-17.

The second set was your classic back-and-forth battle between two very determined teams that had a lot of lead changes and more than a handful of ties. A kill by Laklin Shadix gave the Lady Warriors a 9-8 lead, but Lawrence County came back to take an 11-9 lead. They later held a 16-13 advantage, but another kill by Laklin Shadix tied the game up at 16. The Lady Red Devils broke the tie and held a 19-17 lead, but kills by Laklin Shadix, Fell, and Wheeler gave West Point a 20-19 lead. The Lady Warriors took a 24-22 lead on a kill by Liberty Shadix and an ace from Caitlee Simmons, but Lawrence County came back to tie things up at 25. West Point held a slim 27-26 lead on a point by Laklin Shadix, but Lawrence County collected the final three points of the game to take the second set, 29-27.

The Lady Red Devils jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, but the Lady Warriors rallied to tie things up at seven on a Katie Beth Yovino kill. They later broke an 8-8 tie with three straight points: a point and kill by Laklin Shadix and a Yovino ace, and that gave them an 11-8 lead. Later on, a kill from Yovino gave West Point a 16-13 lead. They would later reel off five points in a row as Wheeler picked up back-to-back aces to push the Lady Warrior lead to 21-14. The Lady Red Devils later made it a 24-18 game, but West Point collected the final point of the set to win, 25-18.

Lawrence County held a 7-3 lead in the fourth set, and later made it 9-4, but West Point got kills from Wheeler and Simmons and a point from Wheeler to cut it to 9-8. The Lady Warriors later made it a 12-10 game, but the Lady Red Devils scored the next eight points to take a 20-10 lead. West Point cut it to 21-14 on a Liberty Shadix and later on, to 22-16 on a kill by Yovino. They wouldn’t get any closer after that, though, as Lawrence County would end up taking the set, 25-17, to win the series, 3-1.

Lawrence County 2 – Cold Springs 0

Lawrence County jumped out to a quick 12-1 lead in the first set against Cold Springs. The Lady Eagles later made it a 15-4 game, and later, 18-6, but the Lady Red Devils went on to take the first set, 25-8.

The Lady Red Devils scored the first three points of the second set, but Cold Springs got on the scoreboard on a point by Ciara Calvert. The Lady Eagles later made it a 7-4 game, but five straight points by Lawrence County gave them a 12-4 lead. Another point by Calvert made it a 12-5 game, but Lawrence County quickly pushed their lead to 15-6. They later made it a 20-6 game, but a pair of aces from Cheyenne Bishop cut it to 20-10. A point from Ellanora Slusser made it a 21-12 game, but the Lady Red Devils ended up getting the final four points to take the second set, 25-12.

West Point 2 – Cold Springs 0

A point by Mary Warden and an ace from Kaley Barger gave Cold Springs an early 2-1 lead, but a pair of points from Liberty Shadix and a kill from Adrianna Owens helped give West Point a 6-2 lead. The Lady Warriors went on a huge run as a pair of kills and a point by Liberty Shadix, kills from Laklin Shadix and Yovino, and a trio of aces from Charli Aris, helped them increase their lead to 14-3. A pair of kills by Laklin Shadix and a Macie Brown ace made it a 20-5 game. A point and a kill by Ciara Calvert helped the Lady Eagles cut the deficit to 12 at 22-10, but the Lady Warriors got kills from Simmons and Kylee Quinn, and an ace from Patton Fell, as they ended up taking the first set, 25-10.

Cold Springs jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead behind kills from Malaya Taylor and Kortnie Williams and an ace from Bishop, and later held a 5-3 lead. Points by Liberty and Laklin Shadix, and a pair of aces from Wheeler gave West Point an 8-5 lead. A point by Calvert made it a 9-7 game, but West Point broke the game wide open with an 11-0 run, including a point by Wheeler, and a trio of aces from Laklin Shadix, as they quickly pushed their lead to 20-7. Points by Taylor and Slusser and a kill by Ella Bruer made it a 21-13 game, but the Lady Warriors made sure they didn’t get any closer after that. They collected the final four points of the game as Quinn delivered the game-winning point for West Point as they ended up sweeping the Lady Eagles, 25-10, and 25-13.

West Point will travel to Russellville to take on the Lady Golden Tigers and Wilson in a tri-match on Thursday and Cold Springs will head home to take on Falkville and Holly Pond in a tri-match as well.
