TUSCUMBIA, Ala. – The Meek Tigers made the trek to Tuscumbia for a regional battle with Colbert Heights Friday night and the Tigers made a late push to come from behind and pull out a win, but their effort came up just short and the Wildcats held on to defeat Meek 30-28.

A 30-yard touchdown gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead over Meek in the opening period and Colbert Heights added another long scoring run later in the second to build a 12-0 lead over the Tigers going into the halftime break.

Meek was able to get on the board in the third quarter when Justin Freeman punched one into the end zone from 8 yards out and Evan McCay connected with Freeman for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 12-8 with four minutes remaining in the third. However, the Wildcats answered right away, returning the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to extend their lead to 18-8.

Cam Deaver was the next one to respond for Meek, breaking off a 42-yard touchdown run to trim Colbert Heights’ lead to 18-14 with 11 minutes on the clock. The Wildcats punched back, putting together another scoring drive to stretch the lead to 24-14 and after a 12-yard touchdown run by McCay made it 24-20, the Wildcats moved back in front 30-20 on a long touchdown run. Deaver punched one into the end zone for a touchdown and ran in the two-point conversion to make it a 30-28 game with just over a minute on the clock, but the Tigers couldn’t come any closer than that and Colbert Heights held on to win a nailbiter 30-28.

Meek will return home next week for another regional matchup against Phillips Bear Creek.
