William Daniel Keel, age 88, of Cullman, Alabama passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023.

As those who knew him can attest, Dan was truly one of a kind and his larger than life personality will be sorely missed. He was primarily known for his quick wit and brutal honesty. You never had to wonder what he was thinking.

Dan was a proud veteran of the US Navy and a graduate of the University of Alabama. He was the longtime owner of Smith-Gray Insurance and served for over forty years on the board of First Community Bank. He loved golf and served Terri Pines as both a board member and past president.

He also served on the city parks and recreation board and was very involved in coaching youth sports. In the decades that followed many of his former players would tell him that he was their all-time favorite coach. That was a great source of pride and joy for him. He knew how to coach but also kept it fun,and kids loved playing for him.

Dan had a generous side as well, always willing to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate. His Motto was that he would help anyone who was trying to help themselves. This ranged from finding people jobs to buying sports equipment for kids whose families couldn’t afford it. Rest in peace.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Hays Keel; his daughter Karen Keel Knight.

Dan is survived by his son Jud Keel; his grandchildren Zachary Knight (Rachel), Nathan Knight (Alexandra), Jaxon Keel and Weston Keel and his great-grandchildren Trotter Knight, Nolan Knight, Ava Knight, David Knight and Hannah Knight.

A celebration of life visitation for Dan will be held Friday, Aug. 4, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Following the celebration of life visitation will be a celebration of life memorial service at 11 a.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Ave NW, Cullman, AL 35055.
