Obituary: Vo Thi “Bay” Bacate

Vo Thi “Bay” Bacate, age 88, passed away peacefully April 18, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vo Van Lu and Le Thi Chung and her loving husband of 45 years, Emilo “Mel”Bacate.

She is survived by her children, Vo Thi Kieu Oanh (Hoang Van Phuong), Imelda Jordan (Michael), Jonnie Bacate (Rodilyn), and Norman Bacate (Deborah), and her grandchildren, Malory Long(Shon), Megan Bacate, Keilani Jordan, Jakob Jordan, Dexten Bacate, Jayden Bacate, Christi Clay (Cody), Hoang Tu Duy Khoi Nyguyen, Hoang Duc Phu Nguyen, Hoagn Que Chi, her brother Vo Kien, two sisters Vo Thi Nu, Vo Thi Tam and several nieces and nephews.

Bay worked at many places over her lifetime but spent the last part of her life working at St. Bernard Preparatory School, where she retired at the age of 86. Bay believed hard work kept her young and productive. She often said, “I’ll just be bored if I stay home all day, staying busy keeps me going.”

When Bay wasn’t working she would spend time with her children and grandchildren. Some of her happiest times were spent in her kitchen or around the dining table with family. She was a fabulous cook. She always kept a pot of chow on the stove and some eggrolls made for the grandkids. Bay also spent time outside in her vegetable garden and tending to her flowers. She had a green thumb and could grow anything.

Bay was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church. She had a strong faith in God that she shared with her family. Even though we are deeply saddened and will greatly miss her, we find comfort in knowing she is at peace with the Lord and has been reunited with her husband.
