CULLMAN, Ala. – With food insecurity on the rise, the North Alabama Agriplex is proud to bring back its “Glean Team” for another growing season. The Glean Team partners with local farmers and growers and local food banks and pantries to diversify their offerings for families in need. In 2022 alone, the Glean Team placed over 7,100 pounds of local, fresh produce in 15 different feeding agencies across the county.

North Alabama Agriplex Outreach and Resource Coordinator Linda Holland shared, “Our feeding agencies in Cullman do an amazing job supporting individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, and we are always thankful to add fresh, local produce to what they offer their clients.”

When asked what amateur gardeners or growers can do to help, Holland suggested to “sow another row” and donate those fresh fruits and vegetables to the Agriplex’s gleaning efforts. “When the produce is ready, we will gladly receive it at the Agriplex, or we’ll collect it, weigh the produce and deliver it to a feeding agency. At the end of the year, the grower will receive a tax receipt for their donation from our partnering agency, the Society of St. Andrew.”

Holland made sure to credit the unsung heroes of the Glean Team: “The vendors at the Festhalle, our Cullman County Master Gardeners, so many local growers and our volunteers make the Glean Team succeed.”
