CULLMAN, Ala. – The Refuge Church of God will host a self-defense class on Thursday, March 9, at 6 p.m. at 1115 U.S. Highway 278 East. Open to the public, the class will be instructed by members of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Participation in self-defense classes teaches options and available choices in the event of a physical attack. The classes allow for an elevated level of awareness and assertiveness needed during a would-be attack. Safety skills and physical prowess give the opportunity to prevent and escape violent assaults.

Training prepares a potential victim with tools to deescalate or fight back during a physical altercation, potentially reducing the likelihood of harm. The National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence notes that, “Women usually know their attackers, therefore it is essential that a person is trained in how to deal with the violence that can come from someone you know.”

Self-defense courses offer no guarantees of personal safety but do provide valuable information and tools to decrease the chances of harm.
