PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders race past Broncos 59-42, Lady Raiders handle Holly Pond 51-16

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The Good Hope Raiders and Lady Raiders were both back home to host a pair of varsity matchups against Holly Pond and both teams were able to collect impressive wins over the visiting Broncos. The Lady Raiders got things started with a 51-16 win over the Lady Broncos and in the boys’ game, Good Hope put together a great effort defensively to defeat Holly Pond 59-42.

Good Hope 51 – Holly Pond 16 (Varsity Girls)

A three-pointer by Ivey Maddox and a quick basket by Bailey Tetro gave Good Hope a 5-0 start over the Lady Broncos but Alana Phillips scored inside to get Holly Pond on the board and make it a 5-2 game. The Lady Raiders maintained a 6-4 lead midway through the first quarter and a three-pointer from Heather Tetro stretched the lead to 9-4 with two minutes remaining in the period. An Ellie Burks basket made it a 9-6 game late in the first but a 6-0 run by Good Hope made it a 15-6 game going into the second.

Kamryn Tankersley scored to trim the lead to 15-8 early in the second quarter but the Lady Raiders responded. A basket from Jolee McHan, along with three-pointers by Maddox and Lexi Collins, put Good Hope in front 23-8 with about four minutes to play in the first half and Bailey Tetro buried a three in the final moments of the period to give the Lady Raiders a 28-10 advantage at the break.

Good Hope began to pull away in the third quarter. A pair of Charly Johnson free throws extended the lead to 34-10 early in the third and a three-pointer by Bailey Tetro made it 37-10. Baskets by Rudi Derrick and Heather Tetro added to the lead as the quarter went on and Bailey Tetro knocked down another three just before the end of the period to put the Lady Raiders in front 46-13 going into the final frame. Good Hope outscored Holly Pond 18-3 in the third.

Another steal by Bailey Tetro led to an easy basket for Heather Tetro early in the fourth and Collins drained her second three-pointer of the night to make it a 51-13 game with two minutes to play. Maycie Black scored inside, and Burks split a pair of free throws to get the Lady Broncos back on the board, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Raider lead and Good Hope went on to win it over Holly Pond 51-16.

Bailey Tetro led the way for the Lady Raiders with 20 points in the win. Maddox added eight, Heather Tetro finished with seven and Collins posted six. Tankersley and Phillips each finished with four points for Holly Pond.

Good Hope 59 – Holly Pond 42 (Varsity Boys)

Points were tough to come by in the opening minutes of this one. Blake Rickard and Colton Lindsey exchanged baskets to keep things tied at 2 midway through the first until K’mal Bell drilled a three-pointer to give the Raiders a 5-2 lead. Lindsey followed with a three of his own to make it an 8-2 game later in the opening period and Jacob Haynes knocked down a three to extend the lead to 11-3. Kollin Brown buried a three for Holly Pond to stop the run and trim the lead to 11-6 going into the second quarter.

Christian Couch scored inside to cut the lead to 11-8 but Bell answered with another trey on the other end to keep the Raiders in front 14-8. Sawyer Olinger knocked down a jumper to make it a 4-point game but that’s when six straight points from Tyler Cone gave Good Hope 20-10 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Couch and Dakota Overton exchanged baskets to make it a 22-12 game and following a nice basket by Bell, Rickard scored for the Broncos on the other end to hold the lead to 10. Back to back buckets by Cone put the Raiders in front 30-16 with one minute to play in the period and Haynes and Bell combined to net three free throws in the final minute to give Good Hope a 33-16 lead at the halftime break.

A three-pointer by Brown cut the Raider lead to 37-19 early in the third quarter and Rickard scored inside to make it 37-21. After five straight points from Bell made it a 42-21 game, Rickard split a pair of free throws and Olinger drilled a three to trim the lead down to 42-25 with two minutes remaining in the third. However, Weston Hancock scored the next five points for Good Hope and Haynes added a basket in the final moments of the period to put the Raiders back in front 49-29 going into the fourth quarter.

Good Hope’s defense continued to make things difficult for the Broncos, but Rickard was able to hit a three with around three minutes left to play to make it a 53-34 game. Bell and Haynes each netted a pair of free throws to keep the Raiders ahead 57-36 late in the fourth and Holly Pond continued to battle but the Broncos couldn’t climb all the way back and Good Hope held on to win it 59-42.

Bell led the Raiders with 18 points in the win, followed by Cone with 14. Haynes added nine and Hancock and Lindsey each finished with seven. Brown led Holly Pond with 13 points in the loss. Rickard posted 11 and Couch and Olinger each finished with six.

Good Hope will be on the road Friday night for a pair of matchups at New Hope and Holly Pond will be back home Tuesday night to take on Cold Springs.
