Obituary: Dorothy “Dot” Hancock

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dorothy M. Hancock (known to many as “Dot”), 92, of Cullman, Ala., on Nov. 9, 2022. She was comforted in the days before her passing being surrounded by many family, friends, and loved ones. Dorothy was born on Jan. 13, 1930, to Charles Dewey McAfee and Minnie Alvis McAfee. She grew up in a large loving family with her six siblings in Trimble, Alabama, and graduated from Cullman County High School in 1948. After high school she married James F. Hancock, and together they had six children, raising them in Cullman.

Her flare for interior decorating led to her becoming one of the original creators and co-owners of Deep South Classics in Cullman. While at Deep South Classics she decorated many prominent area homes and businesses.

Dorothy was an active member of First Baptist Church in Cullman. Because of her love of music, she sang in the choir for many years, instilling that love in her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Randy Hancock and Greg Hancock; brothers, Leldon McAfee, Major McAfee, and Donald McAfee; and sister, Iva Lee Brown.

She is survived by sisters, Wynona Hyde and Lawanna McAfee-Greer; daughters, Pam Bryant (Pat), Patti Hancock, Vicki Shaw (Eric), and Holly McLeod (Neal); grandchildren, Alisha Fuhrman (Cory), Danny Hancock, Nathan Hancock, Josh Bryant (Erica), Jody Bryant (Michele), Sera Hancock, Dori Hancock, Matt Bennett (Danielle), Eric Shaw, Jr. (Lori), Brett Shaw (Kelsie), Melody Westmoreland (Dalton), and Rachel Loncher (Tyler); 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of special nieces and nephews.

A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at Moss Service Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., and will be led by Tom Richter, Ed Hayes, and Chuck Johnston of First Baptist Church. A private interment will take place at a later time. Any memorial donations made in lieu of flowers are requested to go to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 Second Ave. S.W., Cullman, AL 35055.
