Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame inducts Class of 2022

CULLMAN, Ala. – A big crowd of local family members, friends, former players, teammates and coaches gathered at Stone Bridge Farms Saturday night to honor the newest class of Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame inductees. The Class of 2022 included Robin Cummings, Emory Gibbs, Danny Miller, Mike Morris, Michael Oldacre, Annette Irons Parker, Spencer Romine, Ferrell Runge, Kristy Ward Cangelosi, Wayne Weissend and Tammy West.

Following a brief introduction and a meal, this year’s Hall of Fame scholarship recipients were recognized.

2022 Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship recipients

Cody Bales, Cold Springs High School

Victoria Rouse Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Crider family. Son of Christopher and Stephanie Bales.

Taylor Borden, Cullman High School

Jimmy Dale Burgess Scholarship, sponsored by CCCDD. Son of Chris and Kami Borden.

Parker Martin, Fairview High School

Charlotte Cummings Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by The Charlotte Cummings Foundation for Girls Athletics. Son of David and Candance Martin.

Robert Ricard Taylor III, Good Hope High School

The Gussie Shabel Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Shabel family. Son of Robert and Jackie Taylor.

Jayda White, Hanceville High School

Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship. Daughter of Zac White and Kimberly Clements.

Kaylee Stallings, Holly Pond High School

Peoples Bank in Honor of Robin Cummings. Daughter of Shane and Michelle Stallings.

Claudia Fallin, St. Bernard Prep

Coach Charlie Richard Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by Merchants Bank. Daughter of Ronald and Erica Fallin.

Preston Williams, Vinemont High School

Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship. Son of Kevin Williams and Amanda Tillman.

Ryleigh Jones, West Point High School

The James Shabel Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Shabel family. Daughter of Randy and Regina Jones.

Following the recognition of this year’s scholarship recipients, Hall of Fame Chairman Jackie Satterfield introduced each member of this year’s Hall of Fame class.

Robin Cummings

Graduated from Fairview High School in 1965, played on Fairview’s first football team – Three-year letterman football, four-year letterman basketball, three-year letterman baseball, three-year letterman track. Chosen most athletic at Fairview High School at Fairview High School, signed football scholarship to Samford University, played two years at Samford before injury ended playing career, founded Cummings Sporting Goods, supporting Cullman County sports for 37 years, president of Charlotte Cummings Foundation for High School Girls athletics, officiated high school & college football as well as high school basketball & baseball for 26 years. Chairman of Field of Miracles Committee. Organized & exhibited “Charlotte’s 23 Jays” Michael Jordan’s athletic shoe collection. Co-wrote Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame by-laws and qualification requirements, served 22 years as a Sports Hall of Fame Board Member. 

Emory Gibbs

Graduated from Hanceville High School in 1969, four sport letterman in football, basketball, baseball & track. Three-year letterman football, football all-county 1968, three-year letterman basketball, basketball all-county 1968-69. Cullman County All-Tournament team 1969, three-year letterman baseball. Baseball co-captain 1968 & 1969. Cullman County All-Star Team 1969. Scouted by Yankees & White Sox, three-year letterman track. Named most outstanding athlete Hanceville High School 1969. Boys State Representative. Hole-in one Terri Pines Country Club 1991. Lead player in group winning first place independent college tournament Shoals Creek Country Club 1992.

Danny Miller

Graduated from West Point High School in 1972. Four-year letterman in football & track, Cullman County Champion 100-yard dash & 220-yard dash setting school records. Ran for USTAF Hall of Fame Coach Gene Mullin at Calhoun Community College. Assistant football coach Good Hope High School 1978-83, Head Track Coach at Good Hope High School for five years. Assistant football coach & track coach at West Point High School 1983-86, first football team to make playoffs in school history 1985. Started girls track program 1983. Cullman High School assistant football coach & Cullman Middle School Head Coach 1986-2008. Coached 11 undefeated teams. Co-Head Coach in track, 12-time boys 5A sectional champions. 17 girls 5A sectional champions (12 consecutive). Four state championship teams. Head Football Coach Hanceville High School 2008-16, region football champions 2011 & 13. First 10-0 regular season in Hanceville High School history 2011. Head track coach 2008-16, 3A boys state runner-up. 

Mike Morris

Graduated from Holly Pond High School in 1987, all-county & all-area basketball 1985-87. All-state basketball 1986-87, Alabama 3A Basketball player of the Year 1986-87. All-state tournament team 1986-87, All-county & All-area baseball 1986-87. Cullman County East/West All-Star Game. Basketball scholarship Jefferson State Junior College, Team MVP & leading scorer 1988-89 season. Basketball scholarship University of Alabama Huntsville, Team MVP & leading scorer 1990-91 season. Assistant basketball coach Belhaven College 1991-93, assistant basketball coach Berry College 1993-94. Men’s assistant basketball coach Samford University, two NCAA Tournament appearances. Women’s head basketball coach Samford University, all-time winningest coach in program history. Eight 20-win seasons, two SOCON tournament Championships. Two NCAA tournament appearances, WNIT Tournament appearance. Samford Athletics lifetime achievement award, Samford Athletics Sports Hall of Fame 2018. Three-time conference coach of the year. 

Michael Oldacre 

Graduated from West Point High School in 1971. Senior class President & valedictorian, four-year letterman basketball. Three-year letterman football, one year letterman baseball. Walk on Auburn University, played for Ralph “Shug”J ordan, four time Cullman Times Coach of the Year, Alabama 4A coach of the year 2011. Girls’ basketball head coach 16 seasons, winning 316 games, nine area championships, three county tournament championships, two Final 4s, school record 33 wins in 2012. Five players to win Bill Shelton Award, staunch advocate of girls’ athletics. Coached math teams at Good Hope and West Point, winning numerous county championships. 

Annette Irons Parker 

Graduated from Hanceville High School in 1984. Volleyball all-county 1981-84, volleyball all-area 1982-84, most spikes 1981, 83, 84, basketball all-area 1983, 84. Basketball all-county 1983,84, basketball all-area 1983, 84. Top field goal percentage award winner 1982, most rebounds 1983, 84, most points scored 1983, 84. East/West All-star game 1984. Qualified for state in shot put 1981. Scholarship to play softball at Wallace State Community College, most RBIs award 1985, 86. Played many years Independent League Softball, winner of multiple home run derbies.

Spencer Romine

Graduated from Cullman High School. Salutatorian & SGA President senior year, all-area football 1995, all-state football 1995. Academic all-state football & basketball, all-area basketball 1995-96. Set a basketball school record in scoring, set a football school record in passing. Bryant-Jordan Scholarship winner 1996, signed football scholarship to Duke University, four-year starter at quarterback, team captain senior year. Jefferson Pilot player of the week vs. Maryland 1999. All-ACC service award “Top 6 for service” winner 1999. Winner of multiple academic awards, graduated UAB school of medicine Magna Cum Laude. Assistant team physician Atlanta Falcons, assistant team physician Georgia Tech University. 

Ferrell Runge

Graduated from Vinemont High School in 1974.  Played football four years as tight end and defensive end. Team captain senior year, member of track team for two years. Graduated from Athens State, master’s degree from University of Alabama. Assistant football coach at Mortimer Jordan High School for 10 years, varsity track coach at Mortimer Jordan high school, basketball coach at Mortimer Jordan middle school, assistant football coach at Vinemont High School. Head Football Coach at Vinemont High School three years, assistant principal at Vinemont middle school for 10 years, principal at Vinemont High School for three years. 

Kristy Ward Cangelosi

Graduated from Cullman High School in 1989. Lettered four years in basketball, volleyball & track, led team in rebounds 1986, 87. All-area, led in rebounds & 5A all-tournament team 1987-88, leading scorer & rebounder, all-area, area 13 all-tournament team. East/West All-Star Game MVP & All Region 1988-89. Qualified for state track meet 1985-89 shot put & discus. All-sectional & all-state track team 1986-89, all-area volleyball team 1986-89, 5A all-tournament team 1988-89. Athletic scholarship to Wallace State Community College for basketball & volleyball, AJCAA State Championship in basketball, basketball scholarship to UNA 1991. Head Coach Women’s Basketball Northwest-Shoals Community College 1995-2011, Head Coach Women’s basketball Florida State College at Jacksonville 2011-15, Head Coach Women’s basketball Florida Southwestern State College 2015-2020. Current record – 565 wins & 212 losses. 

Wayne Weissend

Graduated from Cullman High School in 1968. Assistant coach Hanceville High School Basketball three seasons including first team ever to play in Alabama state playoffs. Head coach B team basketball two seasons, Head Coach Meek High School track one season, Head Coach Good Hope High School football for seven years. Alabama state playoffs three times, 3A state semifinalist 1988, region champions 1989. Head Coach Good Hope High School Track for 20 seasons, won multiple county track championships, took multiple athletes to State Track Meet for Hanceville, Meek & Good Hope, coached multiple state track champions. Served 10 years as Middle School Principal at Good Hope. 

Tammy West

Graduated from Good Hope High School in 1988. All-county & All-area in basketball, softball & volleyball. 30 seasons as Girls Basketball Head Coach at Cold Springs High School (676-230). 22 area championships, seven county championships, six Final 4 appearances, one 2A state runner up, four 2A State Championships. AHSAA 2A Making a Difference Award winner 2013, three-time 2A State Coach of the Year, NFHS State Coach of the Year 2018-19, administrative Coach Alabama All Stars.
