CULLMAN, Ala. – In response to many requests from area senior citizens during the hot summer months, the Cullman County Commission on Aging (COA) is seeking the public’s help providing box fans for its homebound participants and other elders throughout the county.

“Cullman County Commission on Aging is in need of at least 20 box fans for our homebound seniors, shared COA Director Stephanie Lawson. “Our seven full-time centers distribute hot meals to our homebound participants through the week.  We have had several requests for box fans to help offset the high temperatures this summer.”

After a donor gave the agency 20 box fans to meet the immediate request from Cullman’s homebound seniors in need, the donor encouraged other businesses and individuals to consider donating as well.

Lawson continued, “We also have calls from other seniors in the community requesting fans during the unbearable summer months.  We never want to turn our seniors away, especially with a need such as this.  We started out requesting 20 box fans, but if we get more, we will distribute to all our homebound participants. We have a space to store any extras we receive so when we get a call from a senior in the community needing a fan, we will be able to fulfill that need as well.”

The director noted that many throughout the county are without any cooling or heating systems. Looking ahead to the winter months, Lawson wants Cullman residents to keep their elders in mind when the temperatures swing in the other direction.

“We are also asking for the community to be thinking about the upcoming winter months as well.  We would like to have some electric heaters on hand to help distribute to our seniors in need when the cold temperatures arrive. We don’t want any of our most precious senior citizens to suffer,” she said. “We are beyond blessed to live in Cullman County where folks come together to meet any need that is out there.”

The Cullman County Commission on Aging is located at 1539 Sportsman Lake Road NW. For more information or to donate, call 256-734-1241 or go to www.co.cullman.al.us/coa.
