GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Good Hope’s varsity boys and girls each played in a pair of summer play-day games Tuesday at Good Hope High School. The Raiders split their matchups against Hayden and Cordova while the Lady Raiders picked up wins over Arab and Hatton.

Good Hope 32 – Arab 23 (Varsity Girls)

Points were really hard to come by in this contest between Good Hope and Arab. Neither team scored for the first three-plus minutes of the first half before Heather Tetro finally put in a basket down low to put Good Hope on the scoreboard. A three-point play by Arab gave them a 3-2 lead, but baskets by Bailey Tetro and Lexi Collins gave the Lady Raiders the lead right back at 6-3. Back-to-back layups by Heather Tetro helped push the Lady Raider lead to 10-3, then a basket down low by Rudi Derrick made it 12-3. With a little over four minutes to go in the first half, an Ivey Maddox trey increased their lead to 15-5. Maddox and Baliey Keef each added a layup to help give Good Hope a 19-7 lead at the half.

Bailey Tetro drilled a three from the left wing to start the second half, then Charly Johnson and Derrick each put in a basket down as the Lady Raider lead was now 19 at 26-7. A 9-0 Lady Knight run made it a 26-16 game and they later cut the deficit to eight at 28-20 with a little over six minutes to go in the game. But they wouldn’t get any closer after that as Bailey Tetro and Maddox each put in a basket to make it 32-20 and the Lady Raiders would go on to win their first game of the day, 32-23.

Bailey Tetro finished with nine points for Good Hope. Maddox added seven points, and Heather Tetro ended up with six points.

Good Hope 62 – Hatton 4 (Varsity Girls)

Good Hope definitely found their shooting stroke to start out their game against Hatton, especially from deep. Maddox drilled a pair of early threes and Derrick added a basket down low to give the Lady Raiders a quick 8-0 lead. Maddox and Derrick ended up scoring Good Hope’s first 14 points of the game, then Heather Tetro knocked down a pair of threes from the left corner to make it 20-0. Bailey Tetro added one of her own from long range as that made it 23-0. Six straight points from Maddox and Derrick gave Good Hope a commanding 29-0 lead. Hatton finally found the scoreboard to make it 29-2, but the Lady Raiders got some big contributions from Collins and Emma Thompson to end the first half as they took a 49-2 lead into the half.

The second half was cut to 10 minutes and the Lady Raiders put in a lot of new people to give them plenty of playing time. Good Hope ended up rolling past Hatton, 62-4, as they held the Lady Hornets to just two made baskets the entire game. In both of their games combined, the Lady Raiders held both of their opponents to just seven made baskets.

Maddox led the way for Good Hope with 16 points. Derrick wasn’t too far behind as she added 13 points. Bailey Tetro ended up with eight points. Collins added seven points and Heather Tetro finished with six points.

Cordova 57 – Good Hope 54 (Varsity Boys)

After rolling to a 69-41 win over Hayden in their first game of the day, Good Hope took on Cordova as they looked to go 2-0 on the day. Each team traded baskets to start out the game. After a Blue Devil basket made it 6-4, the Raiders went on a huge run. A basket by Weston Hancock tied the game up at six, then Dakota Overton, Tyler Cone, Colten Whatley, and Jacob Haynes each added a basket of their own to give Good Hope a 14-6 lead. Haynes and Jed Clements each scored down low to stretch the Raider lead to 18-6 with less than 10 minutes to go in the first half.

Another basket by Hancock made it 20-8, then six straight points by Charlie O’Neil pushed Good Hope’s lead to 26-15. An Eli Clements trey made it 31-18, but the Blue Devils trimmed the deficit to nine at 31-22 at the half. The Raiders got off to a red-hot start to the second half as a Haynes basket, later followed by an Overton three, gave them a 36-22 lead early in the second half. A Hancock trey increased Good Hope’s lead to 41-24, then later on, layups by Cone and Tucker Malin made it a 45-26 game with a little over 13 minutes to go in the game.

But Cordova would go on a furious rally to get back in the game. After a Cone basket pushed Good Hope’s lead to 47-28, the Blue Devils went on a 17-2 run to make it a 49-45 game with a little over six minutes to go in the contest. A Hancock trey stopped the bleeding for a run as that made it a 52-45 game. Cordova was not done, however, as they ended up trimming the Raider lead to 52-50. A Hancock basket down low helped push Good Hope’s lead to 54-50, but the Blue Devils scored the next seven points to take a stunning 57-54 lead with six seconds left in the game. A Hancock three-point attempt went off the rim and Good Hope ended up dropping a heartbreaker to Cordova, 57-54.

Hancock led the way for Good Hope with 16 points. Cone added eight points, while Malin, O’Neil and Haynes each ended up with six points.

The Raiders will play at the Supreme Courts in Guntersville Wednesday.
