PREP BASKETBALL: No. 2 Good Hope bests No. 6 Priceville 58-41, Raiders topple ninth-ranked Bulldogs 46-39

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – After collecting a pair of County Championships over the weekend, Good Hope returned home Monday night to host a pair of ranked Priceville teams on senior night. The second-ranked Lady Raiders got the night started with a top 10 matchup and defeated the sixth-ranked Lady Bulldogs 58-41 and the Raiders followed them with an impressive, 46-39 victory over the ninth-ranked Bulldogs to cap off a special night at D.E. Ryan Gymnasium. Between the games, senior Good Hope players Tanner Malin, Kyndall Seal, Noah Barnette, Renee McLeod, Canaan Jones and Desire’ Odachowski were honored in front of their home crowd after outstanding Raider careers.

Good Hope 58 – Priceville 41 (Varsity Girls)

Priceville jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead over Good Hope early in the first period, but the Lady Raiders got on the scoreboard with 4:25 remaining in the first quarter on an Ivey Maddox short jumper. Rudi Derrick scored in the paint to make it an 8-4 game with less than two minutes to go in the opening quarter. A Lady Bulldog basket down low gave them a 12-7 lead, but a Maddox trey cut it to 12-9. Bailey Tetro got fouled while shooting a three and ended up hitting all three free throws as Good Hope and Priceville went into the second period tied up at 12.

A pair of Maddox threes gave the Lady Raiders an 18-16 lead, but Priceville scored on a pair of baskets in the paint to give them a 20-18 lead. Derrick then tied the game up at 20 on a layup, but the Lady Bulldogs broke the tie with a layup. Later on in the second period, a huge steal by Maddox later led to a Derrick trey from the left corner as the Lady Raiders would take a 23-22 lead into the locker room.

A Priceville basket in the paint gave them an early 24-23 lead in the third quarter, but Good Hope quickly turned up the heat, shooting-wise, as a Maddox free throw tied the game up at 24. A basket by Bailey Tetro and threes by Heather Tetro and Maddox quickly gave the Lady Raiders a 32-24 lead. Bailey Tetro would add a pair of baskets in the paint as Good Hope stretched their lead to 36-26. A Renee McLeod basket and a Kyndall Seal three from the top of the key pushed the Lady Raider lead to double-digits at 41-28 going into the final period.

Good Hope added on to their lead in the fourth quarter. Heather Tetro knocked down a trey from the left corner to make it 44-30, then she converted on the old-fashioned four-point play to push their lead to 48-30 with 4:36 remaining in the game. A Lady Bulldog three cut it to 48-33, but Charly Johnson scored in the paint, then Heather Tetro added yet another three and Desire Odachowski hit one of her own from long-range to make it 56-33. Priceville made a late run to cut into the Good Hope lead, but it was too little, too late, for the Lady Bulldogs as the Lady Raiders ended up winning the game, 58-41. Good Hope has now won 14 straight games.

Heather Tetro and Maddox each finished with 15 points for Good Hope (26-3). Bailey Tetro added 11 points, while Derrick ended up with seven points. 

Good Hope 46 – Priceville 39 (Varsity Boys)

Priceville knocked down a pair of treys to start out the game as they jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. Noah Barnette scored on a tough basket in the paint to put Good Hope on the scoreboard, then Colton Lindsey scored through a foul and completed the and-one play to make it a 6-5 game. Lindsey added another basket in the paint and then put in a free throw to tie the game up at eight. Tyler Cone scored on a basket down low to give the Raiders a 10-8 lead going into the second period.

A Cone basket gave Good Hope a 12-10 lead early in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs scored seven straight points to give them the lead right back at 17-12 with 3:34 remaining in the first half. Lindsey knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a 17-14 game and the Raiders would go into the half trailing by three.

A Charlie O’Neil trey cut the Priceville lead to 19-17 early in the third period, but another 7-0 run by the Bulldogs pushed their lead to 26-17. Another O’Neil three cut it to 26-20 with 2:34 remaining in the third quarter, but Priceville made it 28-20 on a basket in the paint. Good Hope went on a huge run to end the quarter. A Jacob Haynes basket made it a 28-23 game, then Tucker Malin drilled a three to cut it to two. A steal and layup by Tanner Malin tied the game up at 28.

Another Tanner Malin layup gave the Raiders a 30-29 lead early in the fourth quarter. A pair of Weston Hancock free throws gave Good Hope a three-point lead, but Priceville tied things up at 32 on a trey. The Bulldogs took a 36-33 lead with a little over four minutes to go in the game. Tanner Malin knocked down three free throws and Hancock hit one of his own to help the Raiders grab a 37-36 lead. A three-point play by the Bulldogs gave them the lead right back at 39-37, but with a little over a minute to go in the contest, a huge rebound and put-back by Hancock gave Good Hope a 40-39 lead. The Raiders would then seal the win at the line as Tanner Malin hit one, Cone knocked down three, and Lindsey added a pair. Good Hope’s winning streak is now up to 10 after their 46-39 win over Priceville.

Lindsey led the way for Good Hope (18-9) with 11 points. Tanner Malin added eight points. Cone ended up with seven, while O’Neil and Hancock each added six.

Good Hope’s final regular season game will be Thursday when they travel to Susan Moore.
