PREP BASKETBALL: Vinemont rallies to top East Lawrence 54-50 in OT, Eagles collect 1st win of season 56-42

VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Eagles and Lady Eagles hosted East Lawrence for a pair of area matchups Friday night and the Lady Eagles took the first contest in dramatic fashion. After falling behind early and trailing for all of regulation, Vinemont was able to tie things up in the fourth quarter and force overtime. The Lady Eagles took their first lead of the night early in the overtime period and pulled away to defeat East Lawrence 54-50. The Eagles followed them with an impressive win of their own, jumping out to an early lead in the first half and cruising to pick up their first win of the season 56-42.

Vinemont 54 – East Lawrence 50 (OT) (Varsity Girls)

East Lawrence scored the first six points of the game to take an early lead over the Lady Eagles but after a free throw by Raylee Quick got Vinemont on the board, Whitney Quick knocked down a pair of three-pointers to cut the lead to 9-7 late in the opening period. East Lawrence banked one in from three-point range just before the buzzer to stretch its lead to 12-7 going into the second quarter.

Whitney netted a pair of free throws at the start of the second to make it a 12-9 game and Reagan Robinson and Morgan Flanagan each added one from the stripe to make it 16-11 with about four minutes to play in the first half. East Lawrence pulled back ahead 20-11 but another three-pointer and two more free throws from Whitney Quick just before the end of the period trimmed the lead to 20-16 going into the halftime break. Quick recorded 13 of the Lady Eagles’ 16 points in the first half.

A few quick baskets by East Lawrence made it a 26-16 game early in the third but Quick’s fourth trey of the night cut the lead to 26-19 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Caroline Miller scored inside to hold the lead to 28-21 later in the period and Quick drilled back to back three-pointers to make it a 3-point game. Robinson knocked down a jumper to make it 32-29 late in the third but East Lawrence got another shot to fall at the buzzer and took a 34-29 lead into the fourth.

A free throw by Burks and a three-pointer from Raylee Quick cut the lead back to three early in the fourth quarter but East Lawrence managed to move back in front 40-33. However, a Robinson basket and a pair of free throws from Whitney Quick made it a 44-40 game and Raylee Quick laid one up and in to make it a 2-point game with less than a minute to play. Robinson went to the free throw line with just 31 seconds on the clock and buried both shots to tie things up at 44 and send the game into overtime.

Whitney Quick’s seventh made three-pointer of the game gave Vinemont its first lead of the night at 47-44 early in overtime. That’s when Raylee Quick took over, scoring five straight for the Lady Eagles to extend their lead to 52-46 with just under two minutes remaining. East Lawrence was able to cut the lead back down to two, but Raylee’s final basket of the night put Vinemont back in front by four and secured a 54-50 victory for the Lady Eagles.

Whitney Quick led all scorers with 28 points in the win. Raylee Quick posted 13 points, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime and Robinson added seven points for the Lady Eagles.

Vinemont 56 – East Lawrence 42 (Varsity Boys)

The boys’ game was a little less stressful for the home crowd than the girls’ game before it. A pair of three-point shots by Jaxon Holcomb helped the Eagles build an early, 12-2 lead over East Lawrence. Isaac Moody and Chayce Sandlin each scored to make it a 16-5 game late in the opening period and Kix Johnson buried a deep three at the buzzer to put Vinemont in front 19-8 going into the second quarter.

Holcomb drained another three to stretch the lead to 23-11 early in the second and Moody knocked down a three-pointer of his own to make it a 26-16 game midway through the period. Moody and Toby Hill each scored inside to keep the Eagles up by 10 and Hill scored another basket in the paint just before time expired in the second quarter to give Vinemont a 32-20 advantage going into the locker room at halftime.

Hill continued to punish East Lawrence inside in the second half and another three-pointer from Holcomb made it a 39-24 game midway through the third quarter. Hill converted an and-one play at the line to put the Eagles on top 42-25 and Sandlin scored another bucket to make it 44-30 with a minute remaining in the period. Hill finished another three-point play at the free throw line in the final seconds of the third and Vinemont went into the final frame leading East Lawrence 47-33.

Moody drilled a three-pointer give the Eagles a 15-point lead early in the fourth quarter and Hill scored another basket down low to keep them in front 52-39 with about four minutes left to play. Miller capped things off with a pair of late baskets to keep the game out of reach for East Lawrence and Vinemont pulled away to collect its first win of the season 56-42. Hill led the way for the Eagles with 22 points in the win, followed by Holcomb and Moody who each finished with 10.

The Vinemont Eagles and Lady Eagles will be back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Phil Campbell to take on the Bobcats.
