Upcoming Memorial Day weekend events

CULLMAN, Ala. – There are several events happening around Cullman County this Memorial Day weekend. While Memorial Day has become a time that many choose to hit the lake or host a fun barbeque or party, let’s not forget the reason for the holiday. The last Monday in May is a day to honor and mourn those who have fought and died while performing their military duty. A time to reflect on their sacrifice and show appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy today. 

Here is a list of Memorial Day ceremonies, celebrations and other events happening around Cullman this weekend. 

Cullman County Cattlemen and CattleWomen Sandwich Sale

Friday May 28 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday May 29 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. 

The Cullman County Cattlemen and CattleWomen will be serving up their mouth-watering sandwiches in the parking lot in front of the movie theater. In support of law enforcement, they will give a free sandwich to those who show their badge. 

 

Memorial Day Service- Veterans Memorial Park

Saturday May 29, 2021 

10 a.m.

The American Legion Post 4 will host a Memorial Day event at the Veteran’s Pavilion at the Veterans Memorial Park located next to Sportsman Lake Park. 

 

Smith Lake Park Memorial Day Weekend Festival

Saturday May 29, 2021

9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The Smith Lake Memorial Day weekend celebration will feature live music, arts and crafts, food, contests and golf cart parade.  Admission to the park is free. 

 

Memorial Day Weekend Night Ride- Stony Lonesome OHV

Saturday May 29, 2021

8 a.m. – midnight

Stony Lonesome will have the popular extended hours Saturday for some fun in the dirt after dark. Riders must have fully functioning headlights and taillights to participate. No alcohol is allowed. Rates vary, please visit http://www.stonylonesomeohv.us/.

 

2021 Hanceville Grilled Cheese Festival 

Saturday May 29, 2021

10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The Hanceville Grilled Cheese Festival, hosted by Hanceville’s downtown merchants, will be held on Commercial Street and Bangor Avenue in downtown Hanceville. The event will feature a grilled cheese cook-off, cornhole tournament, food trucks, vendors, shopping, children’s activities and live music. 

 

VFW Memorial Celebration 

Saturday May 29, 2021

7 p.m. 

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2214 will host a Memorial Celebration with live music by Trifecta. Cost is $10.

 

Smith Lake Park Pool Opening

Saturday May 29, 2021

10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Pool season at Smith Lake Park begins this Saturday with admission ranging from $3.50-$5.00 per person. Kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals are also available. 

 

Brother Joseph, Brother Joseph!- Ave Maria Grotto

Sunday May 30, 2021

2 p.m.

Ave Maria Grotto presents “Brother Joseph, Brother Joseph!”- a children’s musical about the creator of the Grotto, Brother Joseph. The musical is one hour, and tickets are $4 in the Grotto’s gift shop. The musical is recommended for children ages 4-10. 

 

Drive-In Movie- Hopewell Baptist Church

Sunday May 30, 2021

6 – 10 p.m.

Hopewell Baptist Church will host a family friendly night at the movies with the movie beginning at 7:45 p.m. Come early and get a great spot. Refreshments will also be available.
