WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point residents will soon be paying more for water. The town council voted Monday night to amending the current ordinance increasing sewer rates by 10% across the board. This would be the first rate increase in over 10 years. In addition to the increase, late fees will also be implemented.
The current residential base rate is $19.00 for less than 2,000 gallons. Mayor Schafer said of the increase, “Cullman and Good Hope I think are a good bit higher.” Councilman Darion Daniel made the motion to increase the rates by 10%, stating, “I say go up 10% and we can go up another 10% in five years or whatever.” Daniel also made a motion to add late fees, though the amount of the fee was not decided.
Council member Timmy Smith voted against the increase. A date for the increase was not determined as the town will have to get with town attorney Dan Willingham to rewrite the ordinance.
Schafer said of the late fees, “There’s no incentive to pay and there are several that take advantage of that. Really, the late fee is the big thing.”
The council also voted to apply for a grant through the Cullman County Community Development Commission in hopes of repairing the retaining wall at the ballpark. The town then considered lights for the walking trail and maintenance for ball field number one before agreeing that the retaining wall was the priority at this time due to safety concerns.
The West Point Town Council meets every third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. inside the Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.
