PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders, Lady Raiders down Fairview at home

GOOD HOPE, Ala. — Good Hope looked to bounce back after a pair of losses to Cold Springs when Fairview Friday night and both varsity squads were able to do just that. The Lady Raiders pulled away late to defeat the Lady Aggies 62-50 while the Raiders rolled to an impressive, 79-55 win over the Aggies.

Good Hope 62 – Fairview 50 (varsity girls)

It was an evenly matched first half as the score was tied at 13 after one and Good Hope held a slim 29-25 lead at the half. Fairview’s Jacy Gorham hit a pair of layups to tie the game up at 29 to start out the third period. Good Hope’s Rudi Derrick started her red-hot shooting from deep, nailing a pair and adding a free throw, to give them a 36-31 lead with 4:41 remaining in the third period. 

The Lady Raiders later stretched its lead to 43-33 after another three by Derrick and a floater by Ivey Maddox. The Lady Aggies answered right back as Emma Garcia converted a three-point play and Sadie Smith hit a shot to cut the deficit to 43-38 going into the final period. Maddox and Derrick each hit a shot from three-point range to push Good Hope’s lead to 49-38. Fairview cut it to 52-45 after back-to-back baskets by Garcia and Smith, but the Lady Raiders increased its lead back to double-digits at 58-45 after a free throw by Kyndall Seal, a three-point play by Derrick and a pair of free throws by Bailey Tetro. 

Fairview went on one last run to try and get back in the game as Daisy Manasco scored five in a row to make it a 58-50 game, but they wouldn’t get any closer after that as Bailey Tetro and Maddox each hit a pair from the line to help seal the 62-50 win for Good Hope (9-4).

Derrick led the way for the Lady Raiders with a game-high 25 points. Maddox added 13 points and Bailey Tetro ended up with 11. For Fairview (7-5), Smith finished with 12 points. Manasco added 11 points and Garcia ended up with 10 points.

Good Hope 79 – Fairview 55 (varsity boys)

Good Hope got off to a quick start on both sides as two straight steals saw them jump out to a quick 4-0 lead and Colton Lindsey added a pair from the line to make it 6-0. Preston Ryan got Fairview on the board with a layup, but Lawton Farr drilled a pair of shots from deep to push the Raider lead to 11-2. The Aggies cut the deficit to 13-7 after another Ryan basket and both teams traded baskets and points for a pair of possessions until a Michael Owens basket gave Good Hope a 21-11 lead, but the Aggies got a huge offensive rebound and put back by J.T. White to cut the deficit to 21-13 after one.

A Clayton Strane three made it a 23-16 game early on in the second quarter, but K’mal Bell hit a pair of shots from three-point range to push the lead to 30-18 and layups by Tanner Malin and Farr made it 32-18. The Raiders later scored seven in a row to increase its lead to 42-24, but for the second straight period, Fairview finished out strong as Owen Yarbrough and White scored the final six points of the first half to cut the Raider lead to 42-30 at the half.

Fairview made it a 44-34 game after made baskets by Ryan and Yarbrough, but Good Hope countered by going on a 12-2 run and four different players found the scoring column during the run as they pushed its lead to 56-36 and they wound up taking a 60-42 lead into the final period. A Charlie O’Neill three increased the Raider advantage to 64-42. Fairview cut it to 66-49 after layups by Ryan and Yarbrough, but Good Hope put an end to any hopes of an Aggie comeback as they scored 11 in a row to help them take the game in the end, 79-55.

Farr finished with 20 points for Good Hope (7-2). Malin added 19 points. Noah Barnette finished with 11 points and Owens and Bell each ended up with 10 points. Yarbrough led the way for Fairview (2-8) with 17 points. Ryan added 13 points. White ended up with 10 points. 

Fairview will host Phil Campbell Monday afternoon, while Good Hope will travel to take on Holly Pond Monday night.
