PREP BASKETBALL: Hanceville holds off Holly Pond 50-45, Lady Broncos top Hanceville 64-50

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Holly Pond made the short trip to Lane Horton Gymnasium for a pair of varsity matchups with Hanceville Thursday night and split the contests against the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Broncos took down Hanceville 64-50 while the Bulldogs held off the Broncos in a tight showdown 50-45.

Holly Pond 64 – Hanceville 50 (varsity girls)

Kaylee Stallings knocked down a three-pointer to give the Lady Broncos a lead right out of the gate and Maddi Ham added another trey to make it an 8-2 lead with around six minutes to play in the period. Tate Duke converted an and-one play to stretch the lead to 11-2 and after a basket by Cassidy Campbell, Stallings banked in another three to keep the Lady Bulldogs in front 14-4 midway through the opening quarter. Victoria Stanley drilled a three to cut into the lead, but Kamryn Tankersley responded with a triple on the other end to make it a 19-9 game late in the first. However, a three-pointer from Campbell and a layup in the final seconds of the quarter by Savana McAnnally helped trim the lead to 20-17 going into the second.

Stanley knocked down another three at the start of the second period to tie things up at 20 but back to back treys from Ham and Stallings on the other end put Holly Pond in front 26-20. After a mostly scoreless second period, Another Stanley three made it 28-24 with just over two minutes to play in the half. The Lady Broncos were ready to go into the locker room with a 6-point lead, but Katie Twilley netted a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the quarter to cut the lead to 30-26 going into the halftime break.

Duke banked one in to extend Holly Pond’s lead to 32-26 early in the third and Sarah Finley scored inside to make it 34-26. Stallings drilled another three-pointer to give the Lady Broncos a 37-29 advantage midway through the period and Finley added another bucket to stretch the lead to 10. Quincey Marks buried a trey to make it 44-29 with just over two minutes to play in the third. Tankersley laid one in to extend the lead to 47-29 but a three from Stanley, a jumper by Campbell and a pair of free throws from McAnnally cut the lead to 47-36 going into the final period.

Five quick points from Campbell made it a 47-41 game with six minutes to play but another Ham three-pointer followed by two baskets from Finley built the lead back up to 54-41 midway through the fourth. Kennedy Twilley added a three of her own to make it 57-41 and put the game all but out of reach for Hanceville. Campbell added two more buckets in the final two minutes, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Holly Pond and the Lady Broncos pulled away to win it 64-50.

Stallings led the Lady Broncos with 14 points in the win, followed by Finley with 12, Ham with 11 and Duke with 10. Campbell finished with a game-high 23 points for Hanceville in the loss. Stanley added 13 points and McAnnally posted eight. The Lady Bulldogs will look to bounce back at Hueytown Saturday while Holly pond prepares to host Good Hope Monday.

Hanceville 50 – Holly Pond 45 (varsity boys)

A three-pointer by Landon Rowell gave the Broncos an early 6-2 lead over Hanceville and a Parker Sellers trey extended the lead to 9-4 midway through the opening quarter. Braxton Broad scored inside to trim the lead to 12-7 with just under three minutes to play in the period and Carson Garrett laid one in to make it 12-9. Jayden Perkins scored down low to give Holly Pond a 16-9 lead with a minute to play in the first and the Broncos held a 16-10 lead going into the second.

Broad buried a three to start the second quarter and cut the lead to 16-13 but Holly Pond responded and moved back in front 20-13. Zach Campbell scored on a fast break to trim the lead to five, but a Gunner Creel jumper put the Broncos ahead 22-15. However, another trey from Broad made it 22-18 with four minutes to play in the opening half. Gunnar McBee knocked down a three to stretch the Holly Pond lead to seven but Broad responded with a trey on the other end to make it a 25-22 game with two minutes remaining in the quarter. McBee and Broad exchanged pair of three-pointers to make it a 28-25 game with the Broncos on top going into the half.

Rowell added another bucket to keep Holly Pond in front 30-28 early in the third and McBee drilled a three to stretch the lead to five. Casey Brown knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead to 37-30 late in the third but Izayah Glenon scored inside to cut it to 37-32. Broad drilled another trey in the final minute of the period to cut the lead to 39-35 going into the final frame.

Dylan Twilley and Glenon each netted a pair of free throws to tie the game at 39 early in the first quarter and Glenon finished off an and-one play to give the Bulldogs a 42-39 lead early in the fourth quarter, their first lead of the game. Rowell knocked down a jumper to make it 42-41 and Sellers drove to the basket and laid one in to put Holly Pond back in front 43-42. Two more Glenon free throws put Hanceville back in front by one but a Creel basket gave the lead back to the Broncos at 45-44. However, Glenon stayed hot and score back to back buckets to put the Bulldogs on top 48-45 with 30 seconds to play. Holly Pond wasn’t able to answer and Hanceville held on to win it at home 50-45.

Glenon and Board each put up 20 points for Hanceville in the win. 11 of Glenon’s points came in the fourth quarter. Sellers led the Broncos with 10 points in the loss, followed by McBee with nine, Brown with eight and Creel and Rowell with seven.

Holly Pond will host Good Hope Monday while Hanceville prepares to travel to Hueytown Saturday.
