Michael “Mike” R. Heatherly, 68, died Wednesday afternoon the 2nd of December 2020 in the presence of loved ones.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie Daily Heatherly; his sons Brian (Heather) and Ben (Loren); and four grandchildren Ashlen, Brooks, Magnolia, and Emory Kate. He is also survived by four brothers Robert, Raymond (Imogine), Bill, and Jerry (Charlotte).
He was preceded in death by his brother James.
Mike was born Aug. 22, 1952 to Mack and Dora Heatherly. Mike was a proud graduate of Good Hope HS. He then attended Birmingham Southern College and later finished his bachelor’s degree at St. Bernard College, where he lettered on the collegiate tennis team. He then finished his master’s and Ed.S at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He began his career in education in 1974 as a teacher at Fairview School where he later served as assistant principal for 18 years. He then served as principal at Vinemont High School for six years. He finished his 40-year career in education as a member of the faculty at Athens State University.
He loved traveling, especially to the beach. For many years he was an avid runner and triathlete. His favorite entertainment was attending the activities of his children and grandchildren.
A private family graveside service will be held at Vinemont Baptist Cemetery Sunday, Dec. 6. Mike was very involved in the children’s ministry at Vinemont Baptist Church for 18 years.
