PREP BASEBALL: Cold Springs tops Holly Pond at home 9-3

BREMEN, Ala. – Cold Springs returned home Monday night to host the Broncos of Holly Pond and after taking a 4-1 lead in the second inning, the Eagles pulled away to win it 9-3 and improve to 3-0 on the season. Andrew Weaver got the start for Cold Springs and was relieved by Brodi Williams after two innings of work. Williams earned the win after tossing a pair of hitless innings and Grayson Mashburn took the mound to put things away in the final three innings.

An RBI triple off the bat of Lawson Burgess gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and Burgess later crossed the plate on a Dylan Gable sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. An error allowed Seth Whiting to score for Holly Pond and trim the lead to one in the top of the second, but a big double play helped Cold Springs get out of the inning with no further damage.

An RBI double from Burgess brought Ayden Alexander in for another run to make it a 3-1 game and an error allowed Burgess to score and stretch the lead to three. After a scoreless third inning, Gable doubled into right field to score two more runs and give the Eagles a 6-1 lead. One pitch later, Gable scored on a fielder’s choice to give Cold Springs a 7-1 advantage going into the fifth inning.

An error brought another run in for the Broncos in the top half of the fifth and a sacrifice fly from Andrew Light brought Kyler Chaney home to cut the lead to 7-3. The Eagles pulled away for good in their half of the fifth when Williams and Alexander both scores on fielder’s choices to go up 9-3 and they kept Holly Pond off the board the rest of the way to secure the 9-3 win.

Burgess collected three hits at the plate and drove in three runs for Cold Springs. Gable (one hit) posted three RBIs as well and Alexander and Williams each finished with a pair of hits in the win. Light and Thomas Bell each collected RBIs for the Broncos in the loss.

The Eagles are slated to travel to Good Hope for a doubleheader Thursday while Holly Pond returns home to play Locust Fork.

Vinemont 11 – Good Hope 1 (varsity baseball)

The Eagles put things away early in their matchup with Good Hope Monday night. Three singles, three walks and a triple helped Vinemont put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the first and the Raiders were never able to recover from the early barrage, falling on the road 11-1.

Travis Hopper collected four hits at the plate and a pair of RBIs in the win. Deacon Samples (two RBIs) and Mason McKinney (one RBI) each posted a pair of hits for Vinemont and Will Rhodes (one hit) drove in two runs as well. Zander Noblett picked up the win on the mound after tossing four innings for the Eagles, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out nine batters.
