Funeral services for J. L. (Jeff) Herring, Jr., 84, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2019 at Cullman Funeral Home Chapel with graveside service to follow at Cullman City Cemetery.
Mr. Herring passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019 at his residence. He was born Dec. 27, 1934 to Jefferson Levis Herring, Sr. and Flora Jane Baker Herring.
Mr. Herring was a graduate of Cullman High School and continued his education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He began his working career with 10 years at NASA and then served 39 years at Redstone Arsenal with the Missile Space Intelligence Center. He loved his work and always felt he had a second family with this wonderful group of individuals. Mr. Herring retired in the year 2010. He and his wife were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church of Cullman.
Mr. Herring was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years Shelby Jean Meyer Herring; brothers Gary P. Herring and Robert L. (Cammie) Herring; son Jeffery G. Herring; daughter Janet Herring Nails (Jim) Taylor; grandchildren Wesley (Amy) Nails, Alexandra Herring (Jonny) Roberts and Calli Nails; and great-grandchildren Emma Nails and Estella Roberts.
Visitation will be Thursday evening, Dec. 19, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. and Friday Dec. 20, 2019 from 10-11 a.m. prior to service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church of Cullman Building Fund or St. Paul’s Lutheran School.
