HOLLY POND, Ala. – The prep volleyball regular season is winding down and the Lady Broncos of Holly Pond hosted Fairview and Susan Moore Thursday night for a tri-match before area tournaments begin Monday. The Lady Aggies knocked off both Holly Pond and Susan Moore in straight sets and the Lady Broncos swept the Lady Bulldogs to close out the night. It was also senior night for Holly Pond and this year’s team had just one senior to recognize Thursday night. Lady Broncos Senior Kyndell Hays was honored between matches and received a warm ovation from the Bronco home crowd. Holly Pond will participate in Saturday’s Bearcat Invitational at Cullman High School and Fairview will be at the Lawrence County Pre-Area Tournament Saturday before both of them return home to host area tournaments on Monday.
Fairview 2 – Holly Pond 0 (25-18, 25-14)
The Lady Broncos held an early 6-5 advantage in their first set against Fairview, but the Lady Aggies were able to tie things at 12 as the set went on. They later pulled ahead of Holly Pond 16-13, but the Lady Broncos managed to cut the lead to 18-16 at one point before Fairview scored seven straight to pull away and take the opening set 25-18.
The Lady Aggies jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set and stretched it to 16-4 as the match went on. Fairview held a 20-7 advantage at one point and held off a late Broncos run to take the set 25-14 and sweep the match.
Daisy Manasco finished the match with eight kills, eight digs, four blocks and an ace for the Lady Aggies and Katie Ball posted eight kills, seven digs, an ace and a block of her own. Micah Means added 22 assists to go with five digs, three kills and two blocks, Jacy Gorham collected three kills and two blocks, Maddie Yeager finished with four digs and a kill and Isabella McGukin picked up three kills in the win.
Fairview 2 – Susan Moore 0 (25-20, 25-11)
The Lady Aggies and Lady Bulldogs were knotted at 8 a piece early in their first set but Fairview was eventually able to pull ahead 11-9. The Lady Aggies maintained an 18-15 lead as the set progressed, but Susan Moore was able to trim the lead to 22-20 late. Fairview then scored three straight points to win it 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was tied early as well but after the Lady Aggies took a 12-9 lead, they used a dominant, 13-2 scoring run to pull away and win the set 25-11 and sweep the Lady Bulldogs.
Ball racked up 12 kills to go with two digs in the match and Manasco added 10 kills, four digs and two blocks for Fairview. Means collected 24 assists, three digs and a kill, McGukin finished with four kills and two digs and Yeager posted seven digs in the win.
Holly Pond 2 – Susan Moore 0 (26-24, 25-9)
The Lady Broncos took a 4-2 lead early in the first set, but Susan Moore was able to tie things up at 6. The Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead 10-7 at one point but Holly Pond bounced back to take an 11-10 lead. The Lady Broncos took an 18-14 lead and then a 22-17 lead as the set progressed, but Susan Moore went on a scoring run to tie things up at 22. However, Holly Pond was able to make some plays and edge the Lady Bulldogs 26-24 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set started even tighter than the first, with both teams tied at 4 early on. The Lady Broncos were able to take a 7-5 lead that they stretched to 10-5 before taking over the set and pulling away. Holly Pond built a 14-7 lead midway through the set before finishing the match on an 11-2 run and sweeping Susan Moore to close out Thursday night’s matchups.
