HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Aaron Mathis, a captain for PSA Airlines, has earned the 2019 Wallace State Most Outstanding Alumni award.
Mathis was recently presented the award at Wallace State’s annual Convocation.
Mathis, 24, has worked for PSA Airlines since July 2016, working his way up to captain in a short time frame. As a captain for PSA, Mathis has the privilege of flying through historic and majestic U.S. cities on a weekly basis. PSA is a regional airline under the American Airlines umbrella, flying under the brand name of American Eagle.
“Blessing is the word that comes to mind in regards to this honor. Wallace State has been nothing short of the biggest blessing of my life. It helped lead me to where I am. Every single person here contributes and helps students reach their dreams,” Mathis said.
Mathis, a Pell City native, was a Wallace State student from August 2013-May 2015, graduating from the Flight Technology/Aviation program with his multi-engine commercial license. After two years at Wallace State, Mathis attended flight instructor training classes in Florida and earned the proper credentials to become a flight instructor. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in management technology from Athens State.
Mathis attended Wallace State’s Flight Technology program through a scholarship from the college’s Future Foundation and has created a scholarship of his own to benefit current Wallace State Flight Technology/Aviation students.
“It’s important to give back to the college that contributed to my journey,” Mathis said. “The first recipient of the scholarship just completed her private license and will be a professional pilot one day.”
